Left click moving video...
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:58:30 pm »

A friend of mine started using MC yesterday.  They started watching a video and then accidently moved the video with the left mouse button clicking and dragging (They were using a trackpad).  They then panicked because they couldn't get it back again.

It seems to me this isn't great default behavour and not exhibited by other video players.  Maybe there's a better solution?
Even when you know  the program it's not obvious how to re-center the video.

We have noticed this issue a while back and have not found a better solution.  Some people want the ability to move the video no matter what.

For TV playback we actually do not allow moving unless video is zoomed in.  If this is acceptable, I can apply this method to video and DVD playback.  Another way is to make a user option -

  • Dragging with mouse moves video position on screen

and default it to not checked.  When unchecked, one can still move video position by OSD menu, but not with mouse.

Either of those solutions sound like an improvement to me. Maybe others have an opinion on this?

Don't do this.  This is how it once was, and it prevents me from recentering certain videos if they are SD videos playing on a HD display (like a projector).  That's because the video would be playing at >100% (because it is standard def projected on a HD monitor).  Sometimes I still need to be able to move the video to recenter it on projectors and whatnot.  A non-default user option would be fine, as would be requiring you to hold ALT or Shift+Drag.

Actually, I think Shift + Drag to move the video would work the best, if it isn't in-use.  It works pretty well mnemonically... "To shift the display, hold shift and drag."
