Recorded TV thumbnails
« on: January 14, 2010, 06:38:14 pm »

When MC builds thumbnails for recorded tv and indeed all supported video types with no pre-defined coverart, it uses a frame from the first few seconds into the file. It would be much better if it could use a frame from say the 10 minute mark instead. This would increase the chance of getting a more meaningful image of the actual program or video rather than an advertisment (in the case of recorded tv) or 100's of identicle 20th Century Fox logos - for all those avi movies ;-)

Thanks.

For TV thumb is obtained at one minute into recording.

Thanks for the reply. Is it possible to make it say 10 mins? Is there any performance overhead associated in doing so and could it be done to all videos across the board? The reason being, in one room, I use MC for playback of recorded TV shows from another PVR device. These files (dvr-ms) get imported via auto-import and the thumbnails are pretty much meaningless because the PVR starts the recording 5-10 mins before the program starts (in order to avoid schedule shifts etc).

As long as there was no additional performance issue in doing this (eg: increased video jerkiness during thumbnail building and fullscreen playback etc) I'd really appreciate this.

Cheers.

We use 1 minute for TV recordings because we normally start recording one minute before program time.

I think it is time for me to heed the calls of making this configurable.

Yes please, but as Ralf says, only if there's no performance hit by doing so as often this is happening in the background during auto imports.

On the topic of thumbnails, I've had times when the thumbnail for one file is generated from a different file!   How could this happen?   Eg: Recording1 has a thumbnail from Recording2 which is even in a different folder!
