What kind of Amp are you looking at, Matt?  I need to replace my home amp sometime soon, and I'm torn as to what to do.  I'm thinking that, if it would be cheaper, I might just go this route... Get a good quality sound card, and a decent (but not expensive) amp with 7.1 analog inputs, and call it good.

I'm considering an Emotiva.  I've read a lot of good things about a lot of brands though, including Onkyo, Dennon, etc.

Right now I'm using a mid-range Sony with analog inputs.  It sounds better than the sound I ever got when I let the amp do the processing.

There are still some wrinkles to iron out, but the approach of using the computer as the entire brain is working pretty well for me already.

I use an Outlaw Audio amp, but have also heard very good things about the Emotiva amps. Onkyo doesn't have any multi-channel amps and Denon's only multi-channel amp has an MSRP of $7500. Of course, you can get a receiver and just use its analog inputs and and outputs in order to use the amp that is in the receiver. However, this isn't the best way to go for sound quality.
