How to prevent MC from writing to media files and chatting on-line?

What combination of settings will prevent MC from writing (anything) to my media files, including:
- updating tags (unless I explicitly make an Alt-Enter tag edit)
- embedding images (cover art)
- re-encoding
- etc.

What combination of settings will prevent MC from chatting on-line (other than media client/server chatter) , including
- requesting anything, cover art, etc. (other than a version check)
- submitting anything, cover art, ratings, usage, etc.

I do not (yet) trust MC (nor any other jukebox) to write to my library. With the current build (151) reporting erroneous duplicate files, bungled cover art, etc.; I want to prevent corruption of my library. Too much time has been spent encoding, tagging, and organizing. The idea of a separate database that can become the system of record for meta data (tags, ratings, etc.) is a nice idea. but for now and the foreseeable future, the media files themselves will continue to serve that function. Also, please turn off the mandate that forces upgrades everytime you release an update (especially when it is labeled as a "beta", as 151 seems to be).

Thank You.

You can disable all file tagging in Options > General > Update tags when file info changes.

You can later enable it and do Update Tags (from library) if you want to write a tag.

- Options > General > Update tags  - appears to be one mechanism that can effect the tags in my files
But could you be a bit more comprehensive?

My question relates to two distinct issues:
1. writing to the media files (tags, re-encoding, etc.)
2. updating the MC library from any other source than my file tags (such as from an on-line database), which could in turn get into my files

Regarding number 1. (not writing to files)
- unchecking Options > General > Update tags when file info changes, looks like a start
What about:
- Options > Library & Folders?  Is everything in this section related to filling the Library from the Tags (such as Auto-Import Folders - Options - Get Cover Art)?

Regarding number 2. (not chatting on-line)
- is (Options > General > Online Metadata) the only place where chatting needs to be sequestered?

Thanks

Again, you can disable all file tag writing in Options > General > Update tags when file info changes.

There are no exceptions.

Matt,

Thanks for re-iterating that the setting [Options > General > Update tags when file info changes] will prevent modifications to media files.

Could you please address my other two questions, how the Library itself is updated and what online connections MC makes? And specifically, what Option settings control these features?

There appear to be two ways the library gets updated:
A. During Import, from the media files directly
B. From online sources

There is very little documentation on several Options settings in MC 14.
Can you define what these Options do?
1. [Options > Library & Folders]?  Is everything in this section related to filling the Library from the files themselves (such as Tags)?
2. What does [Auto-Import Folders - Options - Get Cover Art] control? From where is the Art being gotten? The folder (.jpg), the file tag, or online somewhere?
3. What types of metadata is being controlled by [Options > General > Online Metadata]? From where online, is this metadata being retrieved from exactly?
4. Besides MC version checks, and with [Online Metadata] disabled, what other internet connections does MC make and why?

Thanks

Sorry, but I hope you will understand that we can't always provide all the details you might want.  Some features may appear to you as a "black box".

If you have one or two subjects that are of special concern, please post them in threads with subjects that describe the problem.
