Encoding:Quality:Custom
« on: June 29, 2002, 03:45:36 pm »

From the online help:
"Custom. For your own custom commands, select "custom" in the drop-down menu, then click on the advanced button. For information on command line switches, see http://r3mix.net, then select "Quality" in the left frame."

So how does one do this in real life? Clicking the Advanced button gives me a dialog with only the options to select Normal, High Speed and High Quality. I've checked the registry and the files in the Media Jukebox directory without finding any clues.

Thanks!

CoolBleu,

1. Go to Setting->Options->Encoding
2. Select mp3 encoder from the list of options
3. Select Custom in Quality box.
4. Click Advanced.

How you can set any command line options LAME encoder supports. Default is "--alt-preset fast standard"

If that's how you do it, my MJ must be on crack - when I open the Advanced dialog all I get is the opportunity to set the quality from a drop-down list.

My MJ is still in its 30-day eval period. Does it have to be paid for before this is available?

Thx!

"--alt-preset standard" is the way to go. It gives much better quality than the options discussend on R3mix. In fact, the site hasn't been updated in quite a while, and the people in the forums have come to new conclusions as to what settings are better, with the new LAME versions.

I go for "--alt-preset standard" as it gives higher quality than "--r3mix" and averages at around 192 kbps. You can't beat it.

Here is a transcript of the new recommended settings:

-------------------------------------------------
CBR 320 (Highest possible quality):
-------------------------------------------------

--alt-preset insane
(bitrate: 320 kbps)

-------------------------------------------------
VBR (Variable Bitrate) settings:
-------------------------------------------------

Even Higher Quality

Higher Quality (Slower):
--alt-preset extreme
(bitrates 220-270 kbit/s -- usually averages around 256kbps)

Faster (Very Slightly Lower Quality):
--alt-preset fast extreme
(bitrates roughly the same as above)

Very High Quality

Higher Quality (Slower):
--alt-preset standard
(bitrates 180-220 kbit/s -- usually averages around 192 kbps)

Faster (Very Slightly Lower Quality):
--alt-preset fast standard
(bitrates roughly the same as above)

Compromising, a little bit lower quality than pure standard, but less bitrate (-Y: usually limited up to 16 kHz) :

--alt-preset standard -Y

-------------------------------------------------
ABR (average bitrate) settings: (128 kbit ABR: roughly the same filesize as 128 kbit CBR)
-------------------------------------------------

ABR Setting tuned from 320 kbps down to 80 kbps

--alt-preset

Example:
--alt-preset 200

128 kbit ABR

--alt-preset 128

or (ff123's and Hans' suggestion -- http://www.ff123.net/cbr128.html):

--abr 128 -h --nspsytune --athtype 2 --lowpass 16 --ns-bass -8 --scale 0.93

-------------------------------------------------
CBR (constant bitrate) settings:
-------------------------------------------------

320 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 320

note: --alt-preset cbr 320 is the exact same thing as --alt-preset insane

256 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 256

192 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 192

160 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 160

128 kbit/s CBR (More Discussion)

--alt-preset cbr 128

or (ff123's and Hans' suggestion -- http://www.ff123.net/cbr128.html):

-h --nspsytune --athtype 2 --lowpass 16 --ns-bass -8 --scale 0.93

96 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 96

All other CBR bitrates from 80kbps to 320kbps

--alt-preset cbr

you have to selct "Custom" from the quality dropdown list to be able to specify the command line options

Thanks all!

The problem was, no matter what i set the bitrate to - including Custom, when I clicked the Advanced button I got the dialog with a dropdown list of three choices. I never got anything else. Given that it seemed to be working for everyone else, I figured I could do one of 2 things:

Throw the computer out the window and get a new one; or,
Reinstall MJ

Given that it's practically a new computer I reinstalled MJ and now I'm getting the same dialog everyone else is. YAY! My main gripe is that the highest quality VBR was giving me less than I had hoped for in reproduction so I'll probably tweak that a little bit.

Cheers!

heck, for the best quality why not encode to Ogg Vobis (ogg) format or MPEGplus (mpc).
They are about as good as it gets.

-although if you are really concerned with quality you can't get better than our very own "Matt the Monkey"'s lossless format:
Monkey's Audio (ape).

I use Ogg for files that I need to be small (and actually own the original of ) and APE for others which I especially like or for archiving.

cheers
