What in your opinion are the best audio video decoders and video renderers to use to play avi files.

AVI files are containers which can contain many differnet types of encoded media. So you can't say any one decoder is good to play them back. However there are some filters that decode more than one type of encoding.

I agree with Glynor though that FFDshow is a good "multi decoder" filter which should play back almost all AVI's. And with pretty good quality to boot. You can use CCCP which will install fairly recent builds of a few good filters such as decoders/splitters/subtitlers etc. Or you can download FFDSHow Tryouts for more recent and even Beta builds. Some of the Beta's have DXVA support which works quite well...

I am using JRiver video engine using directshow filters Haali media splitter and video mixing renderer 9

If you have Vista or later, EVR may be better. If not VMR 9 is good. You can get EVR on XP by installing .Net 3, but I've had mixed results with it.

I also use Reclock, but that is generally more advanced. Once you are happy with your filter setup you might want to look at it...
