Static with 48/24 or 96/24 audio and kernel streaming

I'm trying the new kernel streaming output with my htpc. All plays fine apart for those tracks with a bitdepth of 24bit. When I start them I can only hear static noise. I noticed that if the track starts with a very low fade in, I can still hear the music for a while, but loud and distorted. I'm not sure, but it seems like the 24 bits are clipped to 16.
No problems with ASIO output. Is it a limitation of the kernel streaming output?

I'm using Win XP, ASIO4ALL and the latest MC build. My htpc is linked to the receiver via SPDIF.
