Win 7 & Xvid codec
« on: April 14, 2010, 12:55:18 am »

Windows 7 32-bit

I never install codecs on my system, the most I've done is install VobSub Filter and ffdshow.  JRiver Media Center 14 trial seems to have left a lot of codecs on the system and Windows Media Player is preferring those codecs to ffdshow- even with a very high merit in ffdshow config (which seems to change back to default merit every time I open it, different topic).

Anyway I'm only sure about this if: Windows Media Player doesn't support Xvid decoding without installing a decoder, I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

I don't know how to check for the exact codecs installed in Windows 7.  There's nothing in Device Manager to show that.  Re-read what I wrote.

What I'm saying is:  Windows Media Player is decoding xvid.  I've never installed any xvid decoder, and ffdshow isn't doing the decoding.

I am pretty sure you are wrong.

Microsoft can decode xvid on Windows 7.

Media Center does not install codecs, in particular not any Xvid codec, not to mention leaving them behind.

"Mpeg4s Decoder DMO" is the name of the Microsoft decoder that decodes xvid.
