Problem playing mp4 file [solved]
« on: April 18, 2010, 10:11:57 am »

I created a H.264 file in Adobe Premiere CS4 (from DV input) that does not play properly in JR (or WMP).  I suspect I just have the wrong filters/codecs selected.  Any idea what the right settings would be?  Here or in CS4?  Note, I can make an MPEG2 in CS4, and that one plays OK.

MediaInfo reports the following about the file:

I had trouble playing some MP4 files from my digital camera until I installed the CCCP package (see http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/CCCP).  Specifically, all I needed was the Haali splitter since the built-in Windows 7 decoders are great for playback.

I have CCCP installed, although I'm not sure what version.  Is the Haali splitter something that has to be specified somewhere in the filter settings?

Select filters at Options > Video.  Choose the file type from dropdown list, and choose "JRiver video engine (using DirectShow filters)" for Playback Method.  Select Haali Media Splitter (or MP4 Splitter) from "Source Filters" list.  Select decoders and other filters from "Other Filters" list.

Note that mp4 support of the version of Haali Media Splitter installed as part of 2009-09-09 CCCP is broken.  You should install the latest standalone version available from Haali site.

Finally got it to work.  Downloaded Haali from their site.  Still didn't work.  Different choices had different symptoms (stuck on "opening", only audio played (no video), played but picture was way distorted, crashed MC).  Tried one "other filter" choice after another and finally found one that worked.  I usually use CoreAVC for H.264 but it didn't work for these files.  Had to use Cyberlink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD7.x).

Is this the way it always goes?  You just have to try one thing after another until finally it works?

Yes and no.  It depends on the condition of your computer.  For some people no configuration is needed, for others it's a struggle.
