I like the new simplified handling of vob, ifo files in MC15. But there is one thing I cannot figure out. How the playback language of a movie is being selected.

I run Windows 7 Pro x64 and MC15 (15.0.34) both in German and ripped quite a number of DVD movies to disc keeping only the ifo and vob files. I use mostly old DVD Decrypter to rip the DVDs to disc!

Most ripped DVDs play the movie in German (although their original language being English), others simply play the movie in English or French, no way to change the language. The language selection seems to be quite automatic.

Any way to select the playback language? I know, I could keep the whole content of the DVD, but it seems so easy just to rip the ifo and vob files! Thanks for helping!

When playing a DVD, right-click on the display and pick:
DVD Options > Language

I'm not sure if it persists between playbacks as part of the bookmark or not.

There is a recently added feature:

Tools > Options > Video > Video

You can elect a default language for audio, a default language for subtitles.

When playing a DVD, MC checks if there is a language matching your selection.  If there is, that language will be used.  If not, the default language of the DVD will be used.

As Matt indicated, you can always override the selection during playback.

Thanks for the information. Yes, I saw this new option and set it to "German" and "No subtitles". I also checked the content of the ifo files with ifoedit and tested two movies in detail.

The first movie contains audio streams for German and French (inside the ifo file: "Deutsch" and "Français"). It properly playbacks in German. When I change the option to "Französisch" and restart MC15 it still playbacks in German. So there is no language change.

The second movie contains audio streams in German (default) and English (inside the ifo file: "Deutsch" and "English"). With the language option set to "German", the movie playbacks an English commentary about the movie (probably from the "Making of..."  part of the audio stream). Can't even hear here the English soundtrack.

I made snapshots of the ifoedit output and can mail it to you if you need it.  One possible reason for not working properly could be translation mismatch. Inside the ifo file the language definition is in its own language like "Français" for French, "Deutsch" for "German". But the language selector in options is translated into German. In German "French" is translated to "Französisch". That might not match to "Français" inside the ifo file.

Also: What do I need to do to make the language change work: Stopping and restarting the movie alone or restart MC15?

I think this is a great feature as we can reduce the ripped movie to ifo and vob files and still select the different languages and subtitles.

Language selection goes by the Locale ID/Language ID, and not by the name, so the language name translation should not matter.

Would there be any way to set the default subtitles to English, such that they only appeared when the language of the film was not English?  I set it to English, but they display even when the film is in English.

I don't have any right-click option on my remote, so it's quite the noodle to get to the DVD Root menu (which is also not on my remote) and set the subtitles (I watch LOTS of foreign films).

(to tell the truth, I'm surprised that MC doesn't respect the choices made in the film's setup menu with regards to subtitles)

Edit:  I found this in the FAQ:

Yes.  Yes it is.  It does some other great things too.

For example, if you have any video files that actually have other audio tracks embedded (like Spanish, Finnish, French, or the "commentary track") it will bring up Haali Media Splitter in the tray and you can use it to choose which audio track to listen to.

It also installs pretty much every conceivable codec or filter you could possibly need to playback your a/v files, with the exception of Quicktime MOVs (just get Quicktime) and Real Media files (which you can use RealAlternative for).

This might be something worth trying but for one thing: I thought that we were told to disable the Haali Media Splitter in the tray because it conflicted with MC (v14 at least). Is this still true?

MC15 disables tray icons of Haali and FFDShow on start up.  I will make it optional.

For stream selection, you no longer need Haali tray icon.  MC offers stream selection in context menu.
