MC15 a little sluggish - new movie info popup problems??
« on: May 08, 2010, 01:50:39 am »

One thing I have noticed since updating to MC a few months ago is that MC15 is much more sluggish than 14.  The actions that are sluggish for me are starting to scroll through the panes view of movies after clicking on a movie.  After clicking in the panes and then rolling the mouse wheel, it takes 2-3 seconds for MC to respond.  Once it has responded, off it goes no problems until I click on another movie.  Change to a different view, come back and same problem.  This never happened in MC14.

The other thing that has slowed significantly is starting to play movies.  It was pretty much instantaneous in MC14, but is now a 3-5 second pause.  No problems once it gets going.

I have a pretty decent new machine with nothing much else running (CPU<5%) on W7.  If I had to take a guess, I would say that it has something to do with the new popup with the movie info (which I will love once I can customize that view :).  The pause to scroll after clicking on a movie is about the same time for it to display the popup.  Once the popup has displayed, there is no problem with the scrolling.

Any pointers?  Do I have to rebuild thumbnails or build the popup display or something else.

Thanks
Craig

Just in case matters, I didn't rebuild my library from 14, just did a transplant and is it normal for MC +100Mb and be occasionally using 20% of quad cpu when idle?  I also notice that if I click on the movies pane and then roll the mouse wheel it grabs 20% of cpu.

It doesn't sound normal to me. I don't "create thumbnails for videos"—could that be it? Does your log indicate anything unusual going on?

Hi Rick,

I turned off thumbnails for video, but no change.  Guess I am not using them anyway as pvdimport is providing covers.

here is last bit of log...  If the first numbers represent time, it does seem to show a few seconds of delay for the popup??  At the point in time after clicking on a movie cover, clicking the mc menu to see the log  mc froze for a few seconds and showed the little blue circle (new eggtimer) and briefly popped up the dialog telling me the program is not responding (disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared).

I see the exact same thing as Craig. A pause of 2-4 seconds before I can scroll through the pane. My set-up is very similar wed Win 7, a fairly powerfull machine and MC 15.0.35. My media is not stored locally, but on a NAS. I did not see this in MC 14.

Maybe it has something to do with use of external drives then. Craig has mentioned using a USB drive in the past. I use only local. I'm only guessing—I have no idea why it might need to access the media. Is there there any sign of it doing so in your logs?

hi rick, all media is currently on internal drives, library and mc are all running locally and are not accessing anything external.

it is worth mentioning that the pause and circle (new hourglass??) doesn't happen when I am using albums.  nor are there any pauses within theatre view, it runs quite nicely except an occasional stutter.  nor is the problem evident when looking at tv shows, for which the popup is much faster.

only other thing I could think of is something to do with pvdimport and the popup???

There's no connection between the two. It is possible (but unlikely) PvdImport is coincidentally doing something at the same time. To rule that out, turn off it's auto-import functions.

Are you certain whatever is going on would not be revealed in a log? I suggest you post a longer one. You and I probably won't understand it, but others might spot something.

reset log, clicked on movie and rolled mouse wheel, had to wait 4-5 seconds for response, then stopped log.  this is all of the log.

pvdimport autoimport was off.

mc people (presumably matt??),

any comment on the behaviour I am seeing.  the mc response is very sluggish, is this intended behaviour (i.e. not perfect but unavoidable consequence of popup), known behaviour and something you are looking at, or is it more likely a problem at my end that I should continue to investigate?

is there any way to disable the popup?

It's not normal for v15 to be slower than v14.  If anything, it should be faster.  We just need to figure out the cause.

You mentioned you're using the new 'Tiles' list style.  What if you switch to details or thumbnails?  Does the speed issue go away?

Tiles lists load the full resolution cover art, which will be slower than other list styles that use the thumbnail.  Is the cover art for the files you're looking at on a network where loading could be a little slow?

Thanks.

Hi Matt,

The problem is when I am in thumbnails view.  Once the initial few seconds of pausing is over the thumbnails view does scroll a little faster than the tiles view, but the tiles view does not have any pause.

I just checked another similar view I had created and on this one I had customized the default movies view (replaced genre with custom .genre which is a list type populated by pvdimport) and changed the "View Details"->Panes:Dropdown.  In this view there is no pausing and it scrolls as I was used to.  If I change it back to "View Details"->Panes:Top I get no response from a scroll for a few seconds after clicking on a movie.  Most curious.

For me I am happy to have the Panes:Dropdown so problem solved, but you may like to look into it (let me know if you can give you any more information, if you are interested of course :))

It sounds like there's just a pane that's slow to evaluate.  When you click a file, we evaluate which pane values should have checks next to them (for display and pane tagging).

Would you mind sending a library backup to matt at jriver dot com?  I'll delete it when I'm done testing.  Include the name of the slow view.

There's a chance we can get it sped up with a little tuning.

Thanks.

Thanks for the library!

We hadn't seen such an extensive and nested list-type field in the past, and it was definitely causing slowdowns.

Build 41 will optimize away the pane lag you were seeing.

The Tag Action Window for actors also feels slow with your library, so we're going to work on this next.

Thanks again.

Excellent!!

Thanks, as you are constantly told, your company's quick response to any issue, even minor ones like this, is quite impressive.

Just curious—Might that be People filled by PvdImport with a nested list of all credits? I do detect a slight slowdown from that. Or has Craig come up with something even more extensive? :o

hi rick, I used the basic pvdimport settings, nothing fancy. at work at moment, so could be using the wrong words.. but actors list was quite long.

for my education, why is the list "nested".  is it not just a simple list?

The default PvdImport query for Actor saves each actor nested as Name\Role. That looks a little odd in Standard View, but can be replaced with something like Replace([Actors],\,/ as )&datatype=[ list] in Theatre View for a nice list in the form "Actor as role." In a Standard View pane, it results in the actor's name followed by the roles they've played (for the movies in the database).

There's also an optional query that puts a monster nested list of all credits into People. It's essentially nested as Name\Career, but for actors it's Name\"Actor"\Title: Role. That provides a cool way to quickly get a list of all movies a person has been involved with—in any capacity...
