Server running in background without app running?
« on: May 11, 2010, 03:54:07 pm »

Hello guys,

My main computer, the server which stores the music, is also my general use computer, so I do not want to run the full MC app all the time just to give library access to the other computers on the network.

Is there a low footprint app to give the clients on the network access to the database without the full MC app running? If not, I think that would be a very good enhancement.

Tx
Mark.

Yes, it's called "Media Server".

Enable it in Options > Startup > Windows Startup > Media Server (allows library sharing, television recording, etc.)

Thanks.

Yes there is.
ON THE SERVER...Launch the full MC app then change these settings...

Tools > Options > Startup
change dropdown box to "Media Server".

Tools > Options > Network > Library Server section
check the box for "Share Your Library".
default TCP port should work

Now when you start that server and log in, you should only have a blue MC icon in the system tray.
Library server will be responding to remote requests.
--------------------------------------------------
ON THE CLIENT.... launch the full MC app and change the follwing settings.

Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Library Server Client section
Check the first box if you want them to be able to do simple tagging on the client machines.  Otherwise it'll be read only.
I have all 3 of these checkboxes checked on mine.
The drill down into the conversion area and determine if you'll have it convert the files.  On a LAN, I'd have it not convert.  Only need that over lower bandwidth connections such as connecting over the internet.

File > Library > Library Manager
Click ADD button.
Give it a name.
Location fill in IPADDRESS:port of the server.
Click LOAD button and see if it works.

If not, you'll probably need to make some firewall adjustments.

Thanks for asking this question, Fred. I've learned something that's going to make things a lot easier for me! :)

Safe to assume with Media Server running, that changes to be saved back to master from client via Library Server works no problem right?

depends on your settings.  there's one in there like "sync back to library on exit".
Or you can always manually do it via File > Library > Library Sync.
Not ALL of the tags will sync back to the server.  I don't know where to find a definitive list of what syncs back and what doesn't.  I only change ratings tags from clients.

You can also go to:

Start (in Windows) -> All Programs -> JRiver Media Center 15 -> Media Server

Are you saying that all tags will save back when MC is fully running, but not with just the server in background?

Seems like a strange feature not to save any and all edits back....

Some tag changes made on the client will sync back to the library server on the server machine.
There are some things that you can change on the client that WILL NOT be saved.
I don't have a list of those.  Maybe staff can comment or provide a list.

That would be great. Is this stuff in the Wiki yet?

I edited some Genres from work and they saved back.
