connect to library away from home download first, no buffering?
« on: December 28, 2010, 08:02:43 pm »

hi all using connect to library away from home on laptop on wifi (slow connection) is there a way for me to tell laptop away from home (client) not to buffer and just download the whole movie first? otherwise it buffers and stops the movie every minute or so. i'd rather wait for whole movie to be downloaded before watching it.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Bump, and will continue to until i get reply. I have a potential customer for you guys that ive told 3 days ago i'd get the answer for, and i still have no answer for them. I WILL not spend more then 1 hour researching a question for a potential customer of yours(and yes i've searched the wiki and forum for what seems to be a simple answer for those who use jriver as a server\client!)

Just as time is money for you, it is for me as well.

When i get answer i will forward to YOUR potential customer!

i have tested for YOU and tried this on my network with wifi N and it streams fine, They are on G network, and a full movie buffers for them consistantly. they want to know if this will be improved or if there is something they can do to make it work. There goal to buy jriver use at home and use at there office but being connection is lsow at office choose movie and have it download first\instead of buffer. is this possible yes or no?
Thanks

Actually the mandatory full video file buffering was considered as a problem with the previous MC versions. Only MPEG1 could be streamed without first buffering the complete file. Big Avi, MPEG2, MP4, MKV, MPEG2 files did not work nicely with the server because downloading the complete file was too slow (at least for me, even on my fast wired LAN).

Apparently JRiver has been able to fix this, because most video file formats can now be streamed almost instantly.

How slow is the slow connection in question? For example, if the nominal speed is 1 Mbit the effective download speed can be about 100 kilobytes/s. A 2 GB video file would be downloaded in 20000 seconds. Would that be acceptable? (I guess not, but maybe the connection speed is faster and the video files are smaller.)

Perhaps Yaobing could explain what was needed to fix the streaming problem. I wonder if it would be possible to use a DirectShow filter combination (on the client) that would force MC to download the complete file before playback.

Hi! I'm the guy that was on wireless, I've since hardwired and my speed is much faster. However movies still buffer. Is there any other changes to JRiver I can make?

Welcome to the forum.  The buffering may be because the conversion can't keep up on the server.  Try some other formats.

I don't know what you're asking.  If you're asking for codec recommendations for library streaming, I don't know.  Smaller is better if you have trouble.

we were talking about the buffer issue. and techtones trying to access library server and it always buffering on him, and not loading the whole movie first. you suggested - The buffering may be because the conversion can't keep up on the server.  Try some other formats.

So we are wondering which formats you guys suggest. or what could be done on the server end. so he doesnt have to watch 2 minutes of movie then it buffers then a minute of show then buffer. he would prefer for it to stream live if possible but if not, then be able to choose movie and have it download completelly first then watch the whole movie. i can his confussion if one is always waiting for the buffer to catch up and only being able to watch minutes at a time.

Thanks again

You will have to experiment.  Sorry.  Try setting different options to see if anything works better.

A future version may handle this better.
