Nintendo Wii and WebPlay
« on: June 14, 2010, 09:34:10 am »

Hi,

First off, I know it's been MC+Wii's been discussed a few times but couldn't find a simple answer, so here's my story!

So we bought this little thingy instead of the PS3 so that the kids could play with us. No DLNA support but Opera browser is supported so I though of using webplay to stream audio from the PC (in another room) to the receiver through the wii. The experiment so far has been non-conclusive.

Does anybody know why? I suspect that lack of Quicktime add-in. I have an item on my todo list for this week to see what kind of plugin (if any) is supported by Opera-on-a-Wii.

I've read on other clever hacks with Oddcast/xpTunes and stuff. Once upon a time, I had the time to setup such webplay harness - personnally I used Steve Kemp's excellent gnump3d - but not anymore. Also, I don't have a separate machine to have this stuff running and having MC handling the library would be great.

Taking the agile route, as a professional software developer, I'm willing to spend some time and help out JimH and other folks to get the Wii support in MC's webplay. Howz that?

Cheers,

Thanks for the post, and welcome to Interact.

You need some sort of media player on the Wii that can play a streaming MP3.  WebPlay provides the UI to browse, and exposes content as playlists (the playlist format depends on the device), and does conversion to MP3.  It's up to the device to handle and play the playlist / MP3.

Is there anything out there on the Wii that could work for this?

I haven't investigated the capabilities of Opera yet. I wonder if J2SE or J2ME is supported, that could be an option.

Found something - the Wii supports streaming audio and video through Flash 8

See http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/channelsInternet.jsp#faqVideo

All other types of media streaming seem to be non-supported at this time.
