Library server, what decides search performance?
« on: July 08, 2010, 01:45:33 pm »

I have quite a lot of files, so I was wondering how search and library changing performance is decided with library servers? Or in other words, which CPU does the job? The library server or the library client?

When your client MC connects to the server MC, the client downloads the library (database).  Searches are done on the client, then the files are requested from the server.  Neither task is much of a load.

If searches aren't much of a load, the program need optimizing :) But thanks for the feedback, very nice to know. I am checking out library server now. However i have a second problem, how do i share several libraries at the time? So i can just choose between my libraries, liek with local libraries, but the libraries are kept on the library server?

It's more like looking through a phone book than quantum mechanics.

Yeah, but quite a large phonebook :) Searching the library seem to cost more or less 100% load for some tenths of a second. Pretty fast for such a big library imho, but not instant so CPU performance does play a part.

CPU performance of the client is important for large database work.

You can use Help > Benchmark to see how the machine stacks up.  Pay special attention to the 'Database' benchmark.

Hmm, i got 1804 on the database benchmark, don't know if its good or bad though :) Anyway, can I use library server to share several libraries, I have setup where i have several different libraries for different tasks.

What was the overall jrmark?  It's at the bottom.

Here's an old thread on this subject:

No, sorry.  Media Center can only load one library at a time, and so can only serve and answer questions about one library at a time.

To clarify, i don't need to load (or search) several libraries at the same time, I just want the option to choose between my 4 libraries in the library-menu or otherwise, as i can do with local libraries. I want to do this choosing on the client machine. Is this possible? I couldn't find an easy way to do it in the menues.
