WASAPI sync problem
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:26:59 pm »

I have been observing a problem on two different PCs with two different external DACs when using WASAPI.

On song changes (song ends and crossfades), using a fixed sample rate in MC, I get skipping, playback loses sync. Other times, MC may buffer for a moment on a manual track change, and throws everything out the window and seems to cause the problem.

Just happening right now with Library Server converting to MP3, and eventually it just keeps skipping. I skip to the next track, same thing, it never recovers from the skipping until I restart playback.

This has been going on my work PC for months, and I have been noticing it at home on my Lynx system with WASAPI.

I just enabled some buffer flushing and hardware sync of 1/4 second, and turned pre-buffering up to 10 seconds.

I just tried to seek to the end of an mp3 and MC has locked up.

Took 30 seconds for playback to resume (MC displays no buffering message) and it is completely messed up, out of sync.

My upload bandwidth at home as about 5000kbps, and the fact that this happens on my wired LAN hifi setup with WASAPI has got my attention.

Just turned off cross-fade and set to 2 second gapped and problem still occurs; highly repeatable.

DirectSound or Wave Output solves the problem.

No loss of sync on manual track changes, and when seeking MC gets stuck buffering for 30 seconds (doesn't show as buffering just locked) then recovers with no problem. Getting little amounts of buffering on every track change and neither Wave Out or DirectSound has a problem.

Switch back to MC and WASAPI doesn't like how MC is handling buffering at all; playback gets corrupted all the time.

I'll try the same experiment at home tonight on my other system.
