MC as client connecting to a MC server
« on: August 06, 2010, 04:58:48 am »

hello all

I have an issue with a MC server/client setup.
Clearly it has something to do with the fact that the MC server library is on a LAN file server.
Making the file path wrong on the MC client side.
Local media files on the MC server works fine.

Setup:
MC run as a client connecting to a MC server over the Internet.
The MC server runs in a Windows 7 Pro environment.
The MC server library is based on a media LAN import from a "fileserver". Ie. the media files are not on the same server as the MC.

When I try to play an MPG movie I get this error:

When I try to locate the file from withing the MC client I get this error:

Any comments most welcome

best regards Flemming

With a few exceptions, most video formats (including mpeg) can play on Library Server clients.  Videos are played using DirectShow filters.  Therefore the first thing you must make sure is that you should be able to play a local file of the same format on the client machine.

Another thing to try is to go to Tools > Options > Video, select "MPEG Video" from the drop-down list under "Decoders, Renderers, & More (select file type to configure below)", and then set "Source Filter" selection to "Automatic".  This step probably is not necessary as we always automatically use "JRiver URL Reader" filter in case of streaming, but just in case...

If you have made sure a local file plays fine on the client, but still have trouble streaming, email me a log file.

hi Yaobing

I did a fresh MC 15 install using default values. Running XP PRo.
When playing MPG files I get an error saying like the one in my former mail.
AVI files play only sound.

here's a LINK to the LOG file, hope you can get something out of it:

The log shows that you could not play a local file on C: drive.  The failure was in DirectShow graph-building.  The most likely cause is the lack of certain DirectShow filters on your machine.  Installing  CCCP codec pack may help.

alright - the CCCP codec pack made all the difference. Thanks.
I have a question about the streaming itself:

When I chose a media file to view on the MC client the server starts to write.
Not before the complete media file has been written the MC client actually starts to show it.
Is that working as designed?

That is the way it should be.  The client should start playing as soon as it gets enough information while the server continues to send more data.  There maybe special cases (with some file type) in which the client would not start playing until it gets the entire file.  This would not be very good user experience because the user has to wait a long time before playback can start.  We have worked hard to avoid that kind of situation in most file types.

The following file types should stream well:

avi, mp4/m4a, mpg, mkv, flv, etc.
