If you are using the standard 'Artist' tree view, this view uses the Album Artist, not the Artist.
The default "Artist" grouping in views is actually based on the
Album Artist (auto) field. It has three possible automatic values:
1) The value is the same as the value of
Artist if the separate
Album Artist field is empty and all tracks in the album have the same
Artist value.
2) The automatic value is
(Multiple Artists) if the tracks don't have the same
Artist value.
3) The value is the same as the value of the
Album Artist field if the
Album Artist field is not empty.

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=59513.msg402038#msg402038Douglas,
I guess the file format is MP3. If my guess is correct then probably the old TPE2 aka "Band" tags in MP3 files are causing the problem.
Because of popular demand the TPE2 ID3v2 tag is read to
Album Artist instead of
Band in the recent MC versions (this was changed to make MC compatible with the tag mapping in iTunes, WMP and Winamp).
This would not have been problem if the tags would have been once saved with a recent MC version (if I recall correctly the tag mapping change was implemented in MC13). MC would then have written the possibly existing Album Artists values to the TPE2 and TXXX Album Artist file tags and the possibly existing Band values to the new TXXX JR_Band file tag.
If loading the old library and saving the tags once is not anymore possible the following procedure might help:
1. Mass copy the Album Artist tags to Band, or if the Band field already contains new info, to some other field, e.g. to Orchestra (just to store the values for a little while. The values can be moved to Band later in a smartlist that shows only the files that have values in both fields)
2. Delete the Album Artist tags.
EDIT
If you have not used an old MC version or if your files are in not in the MP3 format the above does not apply. Then we would need to find out what has changed since you imported the files to MC for the first time. E.g. have you tagged the files outside MC, did you previously have customized views, etc)
EDIT 2
I just cleared my library and re-loaded - all 11,000+ tracks. The indices to the database aren't right.
I am also assuming that tags inside the database were right before you cleared it. If this is not true then the clearing is irrelevant and we should just try to find out if the existing file tags can be read and displayed in the views in a more useful way.
