Library Question
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:56:33 pm »

I just cleared my library and re-loaded - all 11,000+ tracks.

The indices to the database aren't right.  For example, I have two albums with Jon Nakamatsu as the Artist: Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3; and Gerswin: Piano Concerto in F...  When I look in the "Artists" Listing on the left hand side of the Standard View window, I only find one Album listed for Jon Nakamatsu - the Gershwin.  When I look in the "Albums" Listing, the Rachmaninov Album is there and shows Jon Nakamatsu as the Artist; the Gershwin Album is there too with the same Jon Nakamatsu as the Artist.

It sounds to me like the database indices for the Library aren't right.  Is there any information/files that I can provide to help you diagnose this?

Inspect the tags

In case of Gershwin, Nakamatsu is probably the Album Artist
In case of Rachmaninov, he is probably only in the Artist field

When I looked closer, the Artist for Rachmaninov is Jon Nakamatsu; the Artist for Gershwin is "Jon Nakamatsu/Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra"  The interesting thing is that when I look for Albums under Artist, I only see Gershwin.  I would have expected to see one of the following alternatives:
  Jon Nakamatsu
     Gershwin
     Rachmaninov

or
  Jon Nakamatsu
    Rachmaninov
  Jon Nakamatsu/Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra
    Gershwin

I'm surprised that Gershwin is the only Album listed under Jon Nakamatsu because the actual Artist listed on the files is "Jon Nakamatsu/Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra"  What is the proper way to separate multiple Artists?  I use dbPowerAmp Ripper and accepted their character which is a reverse slash.

One other comment - iTunes processes the tags just like my second alternative.

If you are using the standard 'Artist' tree view, this view uses the Album Artist, not the Artist.
If you make a view Artist > Album you probably see the same as in iTunes.
The default for multiple values is a ;
However, MC don't support multiple values in most of its tags.
If you want a tree view based on multiple values, you must roll your own.

If you are using the standard 'Artist' tree view, this view uses the Album Artist, not the Artist.

The default "Artist" grouping in views is actually based on the Album Artist (auto) field. It has three possible automatic values:

1) The value is the same as the value of Artist if the separate Album Artist field is empty and all tracks in the album have the same Artist value.
2) The automatic value is (Multiple Artists) if the tracks don't have the same Artist value.
3) The value is the same as the value of the Album Artist field if the Album Artist field is not empty.

A link to a helpful discussion that explains this in detail is here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=59513.msg402038#msg402038

Douglas,

I guess the file format is MP3. If my guess is correct then probably the old TPE2 aka "Band" tags in MP3 files are causing the problem.

Because of popular demand the TPE2 ID3v2 tag is read to Album Artist instead of Band in the recent MC versions (this was changed to make MC compatible with the tag mapping in iTunes, WMP and Winamp).

This would not have been problem if the tags would have been once saved with a recent MC version (if I recall correctly the tag mapping change was implemented in MC13). MC would then have written the possibly existing Album Artists values to the TPE2 and TXXX Album Artist file tags and the possibly existing Band values to the new TXXX JR_Band file tag.

If loading the old library and saving the tags once is not anymore possible the following procedure might help:

1. Mass copy the Album Artist tags to Band, or if the Band field already contains new info, to some other field, e.g. to Orchestra (just to store the values for a little while. The values can be moved to Band later in a smartlist that shows only the files that have values in both fields)

2. Delete the Album Artist tags.

EDIT

If you have not used an old MC version or if your files are in not in the MP3 format the above does not apply. Then we would need to find out what has changed since you imported the files to MC for the first time. E.g. have you tagged the files outside MC, did you previously have customized views, etc)

EDIT 2

I just cleared my library and re-loaded - all 11,000+ tracks. The indices to the database aren't right.

I am also assuming that tags inside the database were right before you cleared it. If this is not true then the clearing is irrelevant and we should just try to find out if the existing file tags can be read and displayed in the views in a more useful way.

Alex,

I haven'tyet had time to read the article that you suggested.  I plan to do that tomorrow.

The files are all .WAV files.

For both albums, Album Artist = "Jon Nakamatsu".  As mentioned above, for Rachmaninov, Artist="Jon Nakamatsu"; for Gershwin, Artist="Jon Nakamatsu\Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra"
