Author Topic: MC 15.0.80 unable to play back to 24 bit audio device by default  (Read 1316 times)

Hi.

MC is a nice media player but it has a simple flaw that all other media players don't have:

When using a WASPI output device that supports only 24 bits, MC is unable to play back 16 bit audio files.  All other media players will automatically play these as 24 bit files (with the 16 bits in the most significant bits).  For some reason this problems happens with 44.1/48Khz output but not with 88.2/96Khz output, so I consider this a bug.

The only way to fix this is to go into "Playback Options->DSP & Output Format" and select and output format bit depth of 24 bits.  This is confusing for the end user and should be done automatically for 24 bit only devices.

Thanks

Philip

Interesting. What device does not support 16-bit ?

By default MC does not change the bit depth.

In general, the higher end sound devices that I have seen do not have a bit depth switch in the device control panel, only a sample rate switch or a display if the device can switch sample rates automatically. They accept any bit depth up to 24-bit. However, my experience is limited to a few professional sound cards. I have not used external "audiophile" DACs.

Do you actually have 16-bit 88.2/96 kHz files or did you set MC to resample lower sample rate 16-bit files?

Yes, this is quite confusing. What hardware are you actually using?

Funny, I had to send my Zodiac+ Dac off for a replacement and today at work I tried it with WASAPI via USB on a laptop, and it would not work at 16bit.

Have it home now and may check this out some more.
