Hi,

I've been evaluating J River for a bit now and I really like the audio quality. I've been somewhat frustrated by the remote options though. WebRemote is decent although the lack of ff/rw and the quirky searching are unfortunate. The various DLNA controllers only work reliably with audio conversion and even then are limited as well. Have you guys considered adding a Dacp server?

Dacp is available through 3rd party plugins on Foobar2000 and MediaMonkey. Both allow for library browsing, playlists, searching, covers, ff/rw, etc... and can be accessed either with the Remote app on an iphone, yTrack on an IPad or TunesRemote on Android. In my experience so far, these remote options are much better than what J River provides. I know that there is a third party developer (Melloware) who could probably create a dacp plugin for MC15 but as I understand it (from other forums, so this could be incorrect) he has been having some trouble getting access to the API.

If a third party isn't an option, is there any chance that the J River developers might look into a dacp solution?

JRiver prefers DLNA, an open standard, to Apple's proprietary DAAP system.

If you're having problems with DLNA control, you might start a thread with more details.  I looked at your recent posts and saw you mention uncompressed WAV streaming, but Bob (of JRiver) acknowledged the issue and said a fix will be forthcoming.

Thanks, I did post in the other thread as you mentioned - only one other post though and I'm not at all concerned with WAV, I just mentioned it since I couldn't get it to work.

I would actually like to stream FLAC or ALAC, or rather forgo the actual streaming (since I just want to control MC15 with it as server and renderer) in favor of simply causing events to happen in J River remotely. Unfortunately DLNA requires this streaming setup which seems to have all kinds of problems.

I do of course understand not wanting to mess with what is essentially a proprietary format (though it has been reverse engineered several times over). I just thought I would ask since the actual control programs are quite a bit more mature.

Hopefully a 3rd party will step in and provide a plugin. If not I guess I'll wait for the DLNA implementation to mature.

What do you mean by this?

In general, the ultimate remote for MC is MC itself. You can use most of the great UI features in a normal way when you use the Library Server feature. Though, in this case also the "remote" must be a Windows PC. An inexpensive netbook or an old laptop would do fine.

I'm using j river on the same box that I have boxee, wmc and a few other things running on - wmc for cable and bluray, boxee for apps, j river for music. I could have a pc running to control all of this, but I would rather have an easy hand held device. There is a great general purpose remote  (hipporemote) that runs as a VNC client and lets me control just about everything from my iphone / ipod (including jriver) but it doesn't do remote library access, etc. Not a big deal when I have the TV on, but when I just want to listen to music it would be nice to have a full featured hand held remote option.

Right now I'm getting by with webRemote and maybe when the uncompressed bug is worked out tagnplay will be an option.

Is there any update on JRiver supporting an Ipod remote via DACP like foobar or mediamonkey have?

I prefer the sound quality of JRiver to Foobar but end up using the latter more due to the poor remote implementations.

I have tried all the DLNA based apps and none of them come even close. I've seen quite a few requests for this to JRiver. Hope they'll come up with a solution.
