Infamous Blue Screen of Death upon startup
« on: June 19, 2002, 08:12:18 am »

I am REALLY disappointed!

After having looked all over for a MP3 player that I liked, I ran across Media Jukebox 8.0.  It comes really close to working the way I like to play my CDs.  Mind you I don't have a lot of CDs, but the few that I do have I like to be able to listen to when I am working on something that is just data entry type of work at work.

I installed MJ 8.0 on my work PC, a Win NT 4.0 sp 6 (build 1381), and after it installs the program crashes with the horrible BSOD.  Dang!  Whenever I try to run MJ, BSOD.  Dang.  I had a different PC earlier (Dell OptiPlex GX110, 128 MB,SB AudioPCI 64V), but the OS (and consequently all my other software) was reinstalled.  Now MJ does not work.  Dang.

Any suggestions?

Try downloading from the downloads page, so you get the full version (9MB).  Install as the user you want to run as.

If you converted from 7.2, there is another problem we have found and fixed.  A build today, available on Interact, should fix that one.

Well, actually I did do the full install and ended up with the Media Jukebox 8.0.293 - 9,143 KB.  This was for a fresh install, on a box that had just been refreshed to WinNT 4 build 1381, on a PC that had not had a previous version of MJ installed on it.  Oh well...

Further information if it helps...

I went to the Microsoft Windowsupdate website page and obtained the latest updates and applied them.  After rebooting, I attempted to run MJ again, and got the BSOD, with the following info on the first line (if this helps at all):

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x03BAEC58, 0x0000000C, 0x00000001, 0x800143FA)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL*** Address 800143fa has base at 80010000 - hal.dll

This is a cheap answer, but BSOD's are almost always hardware / driver problems.

Are there newer drivers for your sound card, video card, or CD drive?

Hoping we figure this out...

We know it runs on NT 4.0, so let us know how we can help.

JimH,

Thank you for your followup.

I know it works on NT, because I was evaluating it on my NT PC for about a week prior to my PC needing to have NT reinstalled.  Since then, I can not run it, as it just gives a BSOD.  I am a bit dispondent, since I really liked what I saw in MJ.  But since I already obtained the latest sound driver, and had all relevent NT patched applied, and MJ still does the ole BSOD dance, I am left with no choice.

As much as I like MJ, I'm at the point where I might have to find an alternative.  And I've already looked, and have not found anything I liked nearly as well as MJ.

Bummer.

JimH,

Stop the presses!!!!!!!!!!!    New information to be displayed.

YES, I am now a happy camper!  After I posted my last message, when my browser returned back to the list of postings, I noticed one titled "Media Jukebox 8.0.300 available".  So I decided to try it, ONE MORE TIME (hey, I'm a glutton for punishment, what can I say).  I downloaded the 8.0.300 version and installed it.  Bingo, it did NOT cause my PC to BSOD, but actually started MJ.  Oh happy days...

Thank you for your prompt and professional assistance.

Now, to play with it and see if it continues to treat me well.......

JimH,

I give up.  I concede.  I just can't take it anymore!!!

Well, I was actually able to get MJ to start up without a BSOD and listen to an album.  But something happened, and now it will NOT start up without giving me the ole BSOD blues.  As much as I like your product, and think you folks have done an excellent job of designing the interface in making it easy to play my CDs, I can not persist in trying to get it to work.

Keep up the good work, you have a great product.  Just wish I could use it.

Gotta say,
XP is very ruthless on your hardware. I had to upgrade some of my PC to get it to work but now that I have it seems pretty stable so far.
I quite like it.
It can be tweaked VERY nicely too and has more memory, performance tweaks than any previous MS OS to date.

Alot of cash but possibly NEARLY worth upgrading. Especially if your paying upgrade price not full price.

If it works sometimes and doesn't others, it is definitely hardware.  Could be memory, disk, or CPU.

The last thing I would try is disabling skins.  Could be video related.
