Problem with volume leveling MC 15.0.125
« on: October 06, 2010, 11:42:29 am »

Hi,

I've noticed that most my album have a replain gain of -12 to -15dB, but (at least) on of them is only -5dB so volume is much louder and it clips :(

This album is encoded Musepack SV8 (encoder v1.30.0) just like the others.

I don't know what to do please help me fix this :)

[Edit] As I have had a look at the "analyze audio" it says the files are already analyzed (which is normal), and their replaig gain is -12 -13 dB but when I play them and I have a look at the volume leveling (DSP Studio) it says replain gain is -5.3dB :/ the files are a lot louder

are you using album gain or track gain for leveling?

one thing that can mess up the album gain are silent tracks. they get a 51dB gain.
Quote
now this 51dB
i was just listening to a list with random songs at a low volume, it is nearly one at night here, when suddenly one song jumped at eardeafening volume out of my speakers.
the song that did this is from an album with 86 tracks from which 72 or so are silent tracks from 6 seconds. and since i play with album based volume leveling the song came with a staggering boost from 40 something instead of the -14 it had before the silent tracks were analysed. ah well, hearing the girl from above stumbling again through the house means she survived it.
i do not understand why the silent tracks need this 51dB, they are silent anyway and it makes the album gain less usefull.

thanks

Thanks,

I'm using album gain :)

The album is 20 tracks and the first 11 of them are "intro" 4 secondes which are not loud at all

there is a trick to change the replaygain by hand for those tracks, but that would destroy ofcourse the sense of using album gain in the first place. when you listen to the whole album it is something you have to live by, for when you play a mixed list, i once proposed smartgain..
it has never made it.  8)

im sorry, it was more a link to this smartgain thing.

to change the replay gain by hand, go to a view or smart\playlist. add a an expression column, in the expression just put [replay gain]. in this expression column you can change the value then.. be carefull though. dont use extreme values..
what i did for silent tracks was putting them as close as possible to the album gain. so when you have a view with the expression, replay gain, album gain, you can see what happens.

hope im a bit clear.

I've managed to add expression columns, but I can't figure out how to change values inside :(

you could slowly double click on it, but i find using the F2 key the easiest. select the value you want to change and click F2

Thanks it works very well ! :)

It's a shame that we have to manually change those values, as you said silent tracks have a replay gain of +51dB :(

Your smart gain idea is very good :)

it looks like you are not using the expression collumn there. :)

to make it easy to find those albums, you could make a smartlist. click on import/export and paste the next rule
Code: [Select]
[Media Type]=[Audio] [=isequal(Math([replay gain,0]-10),[album gain,0],6)]=1 ~athis will give you all the albums that have one track with a replay gain more then 10 dB higher then the album gain.

you could change the rule to your taste. for instance taking 'expand to full album' away. or change the value to a higher difference (change the 10 in, lets say, 25)

Coming in build 130:
Changed: Silent files will analyze to a replay gain of 0 instead of +51 dB.

You will have to manually reanalyze any silent tracks.
