MC15 Crashing while trying to download Album Art
« on: September 26, 2010, 12:04:28 pm »

Hello,

I've just discovered MC and have been very impressed with its flexibility and completeness. However before buying the license I'd like to solve a stability problem that has been giving me a lot of headaches.
First I had some problems to install successfully the program, but once I turned off my internet connection and disabled my antivirus (Avira) I completed the installation and launched the program with no problems... until I enabled again the internet and the program crashed.
I used the log to try to detect the problem, and as I had inferred, it seems to be related to MC trying to get album art for the tracks in my library (most of them are rips from compilation CDs which I made a long time ago without downloading the CD art).

These are the last few records of the debugger before a crash:

[8408] 0046831: 10472: Reader: CInternetReader::Connect: Finish (0 ms)
[8408] 0046831: 10472: Reader: CInternetReader::DownloadFromHTTPURL: Start
[8408] 0046862: 10472: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Unhandled exception -- program crashing
[8408] 0046862: 10472: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Message: 0, wParam: 0, lParam: 0, Window class:

I suspected that the DownloadFromHTTPURL routine could be the cause and looked for information about it in this forum; I could only find one post suggesting that sometimes MC could crash if another program was actively killing an internet connection, so I configured my firewall and antivirus to ignore http transfers from musicex.com and yadb.com.

I'm still stuck with this problem, and staying offline to run MC is obviously not an option... I'd appreciate any help from this great forum!

Thanks

You might have to tell your antivirus program to allow MC in all cases.

Also allow MC in your firewall settings.  Not just http.

This is a problem with your machine configuration, not with a problem with MC.

Thanks for the quick answer.
I am aware that the problem is with my configuration, but crashing is always annoying.

After a little tinkering with the configuration of the antivirus, it seems to be that "Avira Webguard" was the problem, despite that I had excluded the MC install folder from the AV analysis.
It seems that MC was crashing just before invoking JRService.exe, which does not seem to make sense as other routines invoked it without problems..

It seems that finally the problem was not caused by the antivirus but by the fact that I was missing the directx dll used by MC: D3DX9_39.dll
After following the advice in this post http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=51117.0 MC has been running perfectly.
