Is my license OK after I change mobo and OS?
« on: November 12, 2010, 11:01:09 pm »

Hi,

Next week I will replace my motherboard and CPU then install Windows 7 64-bit instead of my present 32-bit.

Question 1.   After I reinstall Media Center can I use my presently-being-used registration code?
Question 2.   Any way to export, then import, my Media Center preferences, settings, and tags after I reinstall the program?

You will need to restore your license via JRiver licensin server, this is easy enough once you are back online and have MC running.

Do a library backup from within MC before you rebuild the machine, then once you have MC re-installed restore the library and select the option to include the user settings.

Good luck.

Richard

Oh and be sure to cancel the auto import that will kick off 30 seconds after you first launch MC.  Its countdown is in the action pane (left column) at the bottom.

Thanks, glad to know that aspect will be problem free.

Thank you, I located the paths to both:
File > Library > Back Up Library

File > Library  > Restore Library
  • Restore library and playlists
  • Restore settings
QUESTION: Will my Library Back Up contain the image files for the album covers?

Great tip Richard!
But I'm going to need some preliminary help for that one...

QUESTION
At the present time when I take an advance peek in the Action Window and click on the Build Playlist tab I don't see any options to toggle it on/off. Following my MC reinstall/startup is it going to look different? Will there be some obvious Cancel option?

Good luck.

Richard

Thank you.

Have to get ready for work and get to sleep now.
Will read your reply - as well as all other members' welcome replies - tomorrow

QUESTION: Will my Library Back Up contain the image files for the album covers?
No, not unless they are stored within the files, you will need to backup your coverart folder manually and then copy it to the new machine. If it's the same path as the old machine, then once you restore the library/settings it should  be found by MC, or of course you can restore the library/settings and then set a different path in the MC options if you want to loacte it in a different place this time.

You may also want to manually backup your thumbnails, (search the forum for "backup thumbnails")  but it may be easier/better to just get MC to rebuild them once you have got everything restored and working.  You do this under Tools/Options/Tree & View then click ..Build missing thumbnails, this of course could take a while depending on how many there are to build, but it does run in the background.

When MC starts up for the first time, there will be a box at the bottom of the action panel counting down to start the auto import with an option to cancel, you can't miss it if you actually look for it, just it's easy to forget to look in the excitement of getting MC running again :)

At the end of the day, if you have a full backup of your old machine plus the MC library backup then you should be able to get MC back to the same state on the new machine.

Hope this helps a bit.

Very explicit, clear instructions regarding the Library Backup, and how MC will be making use of paths to the images.
And I'll remember to hop right over to my Action Window to cancel the auto-import before celebrating the reinstallation  :)
Thanks Richard!
