When I tried YouTube waaay back, the image was stretched vertically. It still is, even on several computers with different os'es.

I never figured how to fix this. Does anyone know how?

Try the following while viewing the YouTube video in the Media Center Standard View

1.  Right click on the viewing area of the video and select Zoom / 100%
2.  Right click again and select Aspect Ratio / Source Aspect  

View the YouTube video in Standard View not Entertainment View
Standard View > [left tree] Video > Connected Media > YouTube

Have discovered that despite having a high speed connection,
viewing a YouTube video in the Media Center's Entertainment View
is associated with prolonged buffering at the start of the video; and
when I hit the Exit key, or in some cases change the setting, the
Media Center will lockup.

However, finding a solution to the described problems is not a
concern for me because I find maneuvering about YouTube in
Standard View easier than in Entertainment View.

I only use standard view for tagging. I tried out your settings in theater view and that didn't work either.

Just curious if you have inadvertently selected a resolution for your display that has an aspect ratio not matching the aspect ratio of your recommended resolution.

Try this, open your display control panel and set your screen resolution to whatever is the recommended resolution.  Now run the YouTube video and as before select Zoom 100% and Source Aspect Ratio.  Does that correct the vertical stretching?
If it does then select a resolution for your display that is either the recommended resolution or is a resolution having the same aspect ratio.


Example
All of these resolutions have aspect ratios that match the recommended resolution
1920 X 1200 (recommended)  Aspect ratio = 16:10   (1.6)
1440 X 900   = 16:10 (1.6)
1680 X 1050 = 16:10 (1.6)
 

All of these resolutions have aspect ratios that do not match the recommended resolution
1600 X 900   = 16:9  (1.78)
1350 X 765   = 16:9  (1.78)
1280 X  720  = 16:9  (1.78)

Do you have trouble with all YouTube videos or just some?  If only some of the videos, can you provide a link?

What DirectShow filters are loaded?
