does jriver library restore have anything to do with win 7 services by any chance? maybe i could check and see if a service is off?
I'm just really hesistant about reformating and starting over.
I use acronis. and literally have my whole system, all programs, settings, eye candy etc setup perfectly.

Is acronis not going to work for me?

I did notice this last acronis image restore when i formated drive, and got into my win 7 account system restore for C Drive was stated as missing. Because the C drive had been formatted, and now there is a new C Drive to turn on system restore for.

Does JRiver need any services or could Acronis\My image backups be the cause?

If so, what do you guys suggest for us power users who NEED Image Backups?

I'm really leary Jim on having to Start over i have over 220 programs on my main machine, all tweaked and setup perfectly it would be a shame to have to start from scratch.
So any other solutions\ideas would be appreciated.

Maybe delete all thumbnails in D Storage drive thumbnails?

The old thumbnail location is unknown to the MC instance under new the Windows user (assuming you really didn't restore the settings). It uses the new default location and it does not create new thumbnails during the restore.

I also don't think that MC tries to access media files before the restore is completed so probably any possibly corrupted media files are not causing the problem.

Could you enable logging, restore, restart, and post the last about 15 lines from the previous log? I wonder if the last lines are the same as before.

One thing that you could try is to create a new empty library to a location like C:\Testlibrary\, load the new library, close MC and extract all files (except the "settings" folder) from the backup zip archive to that location and start MC.

Is acronis not going to work for me?

If you are speaking about Acronis True Image it should be able to restore the complete system exactly to the same state that it was in when the drive image was created.

I use it for periodically creating images of my complete C: drive. I have dedicated the C: drive only for the OS and programs. I don't store any media files, documents or other user files on it. I backup the other drives with SyncBackPro (it compares the files and updates only the changes to my backup drives.)

I'm moving this to the Hardware board since it appears to be a general system problem, not an MC problem.

On the new Windows user account MC should have the default skin and the library should be the "default" library before the restore. The restore should replace the default library.

Is the screenshot from your regular account? Have you actually tried creating a new empty library and restoring to it?

hi Alex, no i deleted the new user account already because it gave me same error. should i make it again?

the skin was the default, and the library was default as well.

so yes this screenshot is from my regular account after trying new account.

i made a new windows user account called test. logged out of both accounts. rebooted pc, logged into new TEST account opened jriver, it tried autoimporting the default locations, i chose cancel. and then i immediatelly went to file\ library restore, and chose to restore my family library and i got the same error as you see above.

It might be a good idea to have a "test user" available for a while.

For instance, by requesting the "the last fifteen lines" I meant that we should compare the "previous" logs from the test account and your regular account. I would like to see if the crash always happens at a certain stage.

My email might get grumpy at 20 MB, so that sounds like a good idea.

Thanks.  Hopefully we'll see the same problem on our end.

Matt,

The same library restored correctly on a different PC and if I have understood correctly also other, older library backup files behave the same way.

I requested to create a new user account to see if it would work when HKCU has the default values.

I've suggested 3 times.  Did you remove the virus checker?  Any other "security" software, popup blockers, etc.

I haven't been able to get a crash here using the same backup.

Does it make a difference if you check 'Restore settings' or not?  Try restoring only the library and not the settings.

Also, what if you select a view like "Playlists" in the tree before restoring?

Finally, what if you remove all the extra toolbar buttons before restoring?

Let us know what you find.  Thanks.

Matt. i tried all your suggestions on my user account after reboot, and on new user account test. and it errors on me.
I also backed up library to desktop, then cleared library then restored to family library on desktop and error again.

after reopening jriver. my playlists are there, but toolbar buttons are not. so i'm assuming loading toolbar buttons might be at the end of the restore? because they don't show up.

one thing i've not tried is clearing library\settings completelly. doing auto import (guess it doesn't matter cause every time i do restore it has to rebuild thumbs anyway) redo some settings manually. then save backup then restore.

but that takes time as well.

i'm really hoping this isnt leading to a complete reformat\reimage. i just don't have the time.

one thing i've not tried ...

... and perhaps another one is this:

One thing that you could try is to create a new empty library to a location like C:\Testlibrary\, load the new library, close MC and extract all files (except the "settings" folder) from the backup zip archive to that location and start MC.

Try it on the test user account. The MC instance on it should be clean of any customization (including the buttons).

Also, you have not tried a complete uninstall/reinstall of MC (or at least you have not said that you have done it).

1. Create a new empty library to a new easy location.
2. Load the new library.
3. Close MC.
4. Unzip the "family" library backup file somewhere.
5. Replace all files in the new library location with files from the unzipped backup file (the two .ini files in the settings folder are not needed).
6. Start MC.

EDIT

2½. Disable Auto-import.

ok did that. and it opened the library but still doesn't restore other saved libraries they error on me

So apparently the actual database files are good.

Create a new backup file of this new library (on the test account) and try to restore it.
If it works you have now a working backup file, which is the most important thing. You can forget restoring your previous settings. You can recreate them.

As a next step, I'd recommend logging in to your regular Windows account and doing a full uninstall of MC (tick the option to remove registry settings in the unistaller). If you have any files that you want to preserve in "C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 15\..." (cover art, backup files, etc) or in the program install location (skins, custom art, edited Visualization Studio or Track Info files, etc) you must back them up before running the uninstaller.

After that install the latest MC build, create a new empty "Family" library, and restore the new backup file.

Then you can continue with restoring your other library (which does not cause a crash). Don't tick the "restore settings" option though. The settings may still contain some data that is not right.

Finally set your preferred settings and options by hand.

alright guys...
I was so close, in fact i had the win 7 disc in my machine rebooted and was going to start over and then i cringed realizing i have TONS of programs and Settings i'd have to reset, and a business to run and all my machines rely on this machine to stay up to run our printers. so i thought more tests are needed in hopes we all can figure out what the heck is going on.

I been running tests all day again.
So i uninstalled avast virus, and i disabled ALL Items in msconfig startup and Services (EXCEPT Hide All Microsoft Services - those i did not touch)
That List Is Below... Now before i disabled all of these, and before uninstalling avast i went to safe mode, and tried to restore libraries and all of them restored as they should In My DEFAULT ACCOUNT - They also retored fine on the TEST User Account we made!
My services and startup list i disabled that have made no change(meaning jriver still locks up as seen in pics below even though all of these are not running)
The List of items shut off...
Startup
avast
logitech setpoint
hpqSRmon app
SMAX 4PNP
Soundmax Audio settings

flexnet licensing service
 lavasoft ad-aware service
process monitor - logitech
QBCFMonitorService
intuit Quickbooks FCS
quickbooks DB20
uvnc _service

if i goto safe mode under my normal account NOT test account all library restores WILL work!
The services and processes for safe mode are below...

And my screenshots of processes and services running in normal win 7 mode

As you can see i only gave screenshot of services that were running. if you guys need screenshots on the ones that are stopped after reboot i can capture those as well.

As far as me going any further. i'm hesitant because i'm getting into shaky ground  in regards to knowledge on the win 7 os itself. so i dont want to start killing win 7 services without some advice from you guys.

Hope we can get this figured out?!
Thanks again, and i will leave all services\startup items disabled until/if we get this going and will check emails via the web(not turn on outlook) just to make sure we don't add more items to the problem.

Also please note i am running barebones now meaning no antivirus, adaware etc.. so again im pretty much in limbo until i turn these services back on, but i should be ok if the only place i goto is hotmail to check for email updates... i hope!

We talked about this today.  Matt suggested trying to restore (not in safe mode) two times.

1.  Library only (no settings)

2.  Settings only (no library)

If one succeeds we might know where the problem lies.

Try Jim/Matt's suggestion first.  However, it is really good that you found Safe Mode fixes the problem.  That means that it is probably either:

1. A bad driver.
2. A bad running process of some kind.

The best bet will be to try disabling those startup services one at a time, until you find the culprit.  Looking at that list, this is what I'd be suspicious of first:

1. Stardock Objectdock: Shell enhancements are notorious for causing software incompatibilities, especially Stardock's.
2. Powermenu: Same note as above, though this is perhaps less likely.
3. Outlook on the Desktop: this looks relatively harmless, but the way it actually runs could be using weird hooks.
4. Manycam: This tool looks like it probably has to interfere with the USB drivers to do it's magic, and that means it might very well be doing weird kernel things.
5. Avast: You said you disabled it, but not that you actually UNINSTALLED it.  Sometimes when you disable the real-time scanning portion of A/V Software, it doesn't actually disable the entire thing.  Try completely uninstalling Avast if you haven't tried that yet.
6. Logitech Camera Software: These types of applications are often just writtten poorly.
7. Logitech Setpoint: Same as above.  I avoid these types of software whenever possible.
8. Yahoo Messenger: This is probably not very likely, but it is worth trying.

All the rest of the stuff you listed looks fine.  If none of that fixes it, then it is almost certainly a bad driver.

I'm sorry Glynor. i might of phrased wrong.

im safe mode all services and startups items WERE enabled. and it DID restore on every library backup i threw at it. In regular windows mode all SERVICES\STARTUP Items were disabled that i have listed, and i uninstalled avast. The only items in regular windows mode i didn't disable were ANY of the HIDE microsoft ones. those i was afraid to touch. The services\process that are running after a reboot in REGULAR mode are shown in pics above. The list i gave were the items that i did NOT uncheck in my safe mode test.

So basically in regular windows mode the Only things running now are what you see above in the screenshots for processes and services and she still errors on me.

Jim i just ran tests as you and Matt suggested in REGULAR mode (NOT Safe Mode) With all services\startup items still disabled and No antivirus, any type of secuirity installed.

If so, make a copy of it.  Try restoring it.  I'm wondering about bad hard disk sectors.

Startup services generally don't actually run in safe mode, even if enabled.  That's what Safe Mode does.

However, if you've already tried with all of those things disabled in regular mode with no luck, and Safe Mode still works, then it is almost certainly a driver.  That's the main difference between standard and safe mode.  3rd party drivers generally don't load.  It could even be something like a rootkit.

I probably would hesitate to trust that system.

Thats the Thing Jim.. I've tried MULTIPLE backups like old acronis JRiver library backups from a IMAGE OS Backup Drive, Backups from DVD's, backups on win 7 machine itself on the OS in app data\library backups, and Also backups from my D Drive Which is where i store all my Program installs and Misc. backups. (this is where i make my own backups for jriver. so if i change something important i open file/backup library and i literally save it to my D Drive\Installs\Audio-Visual\J river MediaCenter\ My Custom Library Backups.(In that folder i have 2 files, which are for both of my libraries for a safety measure so I know my last library i saved is what i've saved last ( my perfect jriver file if you will)

And all of these backups\backup locations go back to july and every back up works on XP\Other Win 7 machines here with no hiccups. and on this machine IF IN SAFE MODE, And matt has confirmed the library also worked on his machine\machines.

BUT all other machines here are Very Minimal .. Maybe 10 - 15 programs installed on them. No windows updates ever done on them, no usb devices plugged into them, only 1 hardrive etc...

Quote

I think i answered this above, But to elaborate A couple other tests i've ran, was going to my
Quote
my perfect jriver file
copying it and putting it on desktop and trying to restore it... no go, i've also grabbed jriver library backups from my other saved locations brought them to desktop to try to restore... no go media center error and cshe closes.

Another test ive ran.. was when restoring a library in regular mode and she crashes, upon reopening jriver some of the library is there, i've chosen to save that backedup\CRASHED library to desktop. then CLEAR the library, then reboot, then open jriver (jriver automatically knows there are no files so it starts to auto import. I cancel it, then I've tried to Restore that library that i made on desktop and that crashes too. Which may not be a good test being it originally crashed so therefor the library may be corrupt because it wasnt fully restored? i don't know. but was a test i thought i would try.

Thanks Again Guys.

All good points. But what does one do? Shouldnt i try to figure out what the culprit is for my sake and jrivers?

Also if i decide to reformat and start over.
1. im down for couple days due to magnitude of drives\programs etc.
2. i could get everything setup perfectly again. due win 7 update, install a driver etc... and be in same boat i'm in now and not know what caused it.
3.
Quote
It could even be something like a rootkit.
If so wouldnt my vast amount of security programs have caught it?
4. this system is basically up to date on everything. nothing new programs wise, virus wise etc has been installed, i use it for checking emails, facebook, WORK, (Everything works flawlessly Except this jriver restore problem) And the reason i run JRiver on here is due to the fact i've yet to figure out how to get jriver all my drives separate from this machine ( and i have called many people here from craigslist\phone book in the twincites, and spoke with local networking people showed them this forum, LOL I've even spoke With Jmone\and also offered a Gentlemen in canada who frequents the cities\uses jriver about him coming here and helping me get my jriver off my main system and also asked many people about getting past windows 26 drive letter limit, and simplifying my backup needs(because i don't want to chance a raid system. I like my one to one backups,( And by doing one to one backups the only way i will loose my data is fire)  I just don't like having to go into my safe every week and pulling out 20 drives ( obviously you realize usb devices, dvd drives take up Drive letters) putting them in docking station syncin them and then putting them back in safe. ideally i'd like a way to have another DAS hooked up to machine that has a shut off switch, and i could turn it on and it would run through my profiles, once done disconnect from wall. But thats another Huge topic thats been on the burner for a few months now. And ironically these techs in the cities Honestly don't know how to handle my predicament (Or they do and they try selling me $20,000 solutions (which i cannot afford). Another reason as you may know already from reading this short description for wanting a dedicated jriver machine\Server is the fact i would be able to finally WATCH all my dvd movies... Right now i cannot! they will not load on any machine in the house except this main machine that my DAS is hooked up to. due to the fact i cannot map because of windows drive # limitations.

So basically i'm using my main machine to run our business, To run jriver and jrivers servers. and i have alot of programs and stuff ( video editing, audio editing, graphics programs, Printing programs\Rip Folders)that reformatting is literally a nightmare for me. And if i can figure out what is causing this error it would be a life saver for me. and also maybe something jriver could look into once figured out so others don't have the same problem.

Sorry for ranting but just explaining my situation.

Assuming something in the OS/hardware/drivers/installed programs/etc is causing the problem, I don't understand this:

... Also An FYI I Only have 2 libraries, My Personal Library and the family Library... The Personal Library Restores Fine! ...

What is so different in those two libraries. Can only the amount of restored data change the behavior for some reason (assuming the "family" library is bigger)?

It might be useful to compare the logs. The family library caused a crash at the same point in two separate logs. What is the next event after that point in the log of the successful restore of the "personal" library?

The .jmd files itself are apparently good because it was possible to load a library that was created from the files that were manually extracted from the "family" backup zip file.

xtacbyme,

Why did you ignore my previous reply? Did you try to create a new "clean" backup file, and if it worked on the test user account, did you try to restore it to a clean, newly installed MC on your regular user account, as I instructed:

Finally set your preferred settings and options by hand.

sorry Alex, i'm not ignoring you at all, i got onto troubleshooting some ideas i had, and work orders that came in to put food on the table, Then other replies after yours, etc...and i lost\forgot your detailed instructions in the mix.

I'm going to move forward on your idea after this final test i started last night...

Quote
Can only the amount of restored data change the behavior for some reason (assuming the "family" library is bigger)?
Personal  Library = 1.61 MB
Family Library = 20.0 MB

Quote
It might be useful to compare the logs. The family library caused a crash at the same point in two separate logs. What is the next event after that point in the log of the successful restore of the "personal" library?

Last night Alex, i decided to delete all thumbnails in D Storage drive\thumbnails for both libraries, this morning at 10am it had 145,000 left to build. And is still building my Family thumbnails. Now i've stopped the auto import multiple times this morning. and renabled it multiple times, then went back to D storage drive\thumbnails. and it's still only showing 2 folders( I'm assuming 1 folder for personal, and 1 folder for family). where as yesterday there was over 12 folders. So that seems to be good news?!

So i've renabled auto import and waiting for it to finish up building thumbnails. and i thought i'd try a restore once done. ( just to make sure maybe it wasn't thumbnail issues?)

Once this is done i will clear log on Personal library then do a restore make sure no crashes and save the log. then i will load Family library and clear it's logs and try a restore then i will do as you suggest and post both family and personal logs here.

Sorry for my ignorance could you elaborate\confirm on this?

On test account, choose clean library\playlists, clean settings, then goto auto import and choose all my drives\folders, then let auto import do its thing. once finished then save the backup? then log in to my regular Windows account and do a full uninstall of MC (tick the option to remove registry settings in the unistaller). If you have any files that you want to preserve in "C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 15\..." After that install the latest MC build, create a new empty "Family" library, and restore the new backup file from the test account's backup file? Is that correct?

Quote

I don't understand.. why do i need to restore this one? if it already works?

Thanks Again =)

On the "test user" account you were able to just extract the library files from the zip file to a new library location (in which you had an empty library) and after that when you started MC the library was loaded correctly without doing any restore or import. Correct?

I mean that when you have the above mentioned library loaded on your test user account, create a new backup file that is hopefully good and works on any MC instance. After all isn't the purpose to preserve the organization, playlists, statictics and the library tags that are not stored inside files. A reimport would not preserve them.

The next step that I suggested was to completely uninstall MC and its previous registry data (on your regular user account). After a reinstall you would have as clean MC instance as possible. You would then need to restore also the personal library because the newly installed MC instance would have no data at all (of course you could also create a new empty library and extract the files manually).

I don't quite understand why you are recreating the thumbnails for the "bad" library now before the restore problem is fixed. Wasn't the old library somehow wrong and you could not fix it because the restore didn't work? If we eventually can fix the restore problem a subsequent restore will delete those new thumbnails anyway.

ok i understand now. Thanks for clarifying for me.

I don't quite understand why you are recreating the thumbnails for the "bad" library now before the restore problem is fixed. Wasn't the old library somehow wrong and you could not fix it because the restore didn't work? If we eventually can fix the restore problem a subsequent restore will delete those new thumbnails anyway.
i was just trying to help troubleshoot, and thought i came up with a great idea. but now that you mention it. yeah that doesnt makes much sense. I thought maybe when trying to restore the library she was locking up with thumbnails maybe? so figured i'll wipe them out and see if that would fix my issue.

I have 32,876 thumbs to go... so i might as well wait. but once done i will do the steps mentioned above. i probably shouldn't of jumped ahead. basically from the way your making it sound it is wasting my time.  ?

Perhaps. At least you will see that a bad media file is not causing a crash during thumbnailing (assuming it will go fine). However I don't think any automatic thumbnailing occurs during a restore. It will start later when the files are browsed in views.

My advice may or may not be good. It is just how I would try to troubleshoot a similar problem (based on the information you have provided). Naturally I hope it will help.
