Problem running Media Server
« on: June 13, 2002, 04:52:22 pm »

I am having a problem that results in an empty media library when I connect to my Media Server.  Yesterday it worked fine, but today it is not.  One thing that I did which may have caused this is hitting "Reset" under Media Server->Settings->Options->Current Maximum Bandwidth.  The number reset to 0 from 46,000 or so and will not change.  Did I screw things up?

FWIW, I'm using 8.0.293 on Win2000.  TCP/IP is installed and working properly.  I am testing by running the Server and MJ on the same machine, but the same problem exists on remote machines as well.

Any help is appreciated...

Thanks,
Chris

That's a stumper.

A reinstall may not hurt.  Otherwise, just double check your settings.

Sorry I'm not more help... (maybe somebody else will have a better answer)

Take care.

Chris,
Do you have any proxy set up? Proxies could interfere with Media Server's operation. Also, make sure you have the correct library set up for sharing.

Ray, No proxy.

Matt, I'll try reinstalling.

I am still curious what the "current maximum bandwidth" item is.  It was non-zero before I hit the reset button and has been stuck on zero ever since.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Current Maximum Bandwidth records your maximum outbound speed from the machine that runs Media Server, or rather the maximum outbound speed reached by Media Server. The value will not be accurate if you connect to a Media Server running on the same machine. If you reset it and no other clients connect to it, it will remain zero. Try reinstall and see what happen.

Chris, I want to see if my server is OK.  I tried running it and it didn't work, can you give me your IP address so I can try to log on to your server.  I just want to see if it works for 5 minutes, then I'll log off.  Please let me know thx.

Well I tried reinstalling twice.  The first time I installed on without uninstalling, the second time after uninstalling.  No luck either time.  Below is the status that I got.  Does this look correct?  The "sharing thread exiting" has me concerned.

06/16/02 16:03:46 - sharer starting
06/16/02 16:03:46 - Initializing server.
06/16/02 16:03:46 - Server initialized

06/16/02 16:03:55 - received a connection
06/16/02 16:03:55 - ready for another connection
06/16/02 16:03:55 - private sharing thread started
06/16/02 16:03:56 - sharing thread exiting
06/16/02 16:03:56 - received a connection

06/16/02 16:03:57 - request for library

Chris,

I am having a very similar problem with media server.  I am using Win2000 on each machine with version 8.0.293.  I installed MJ on each machine with the account that actually uses the program that has administrative privileges.  I can use my library without any problem on the machine that is acting as the server.  I can connect to the server from the other machine.  I see a quick blip about downloading XXX KB's and then the IP address appears at the top of MJ.  However, there are no files in the library.  On the server machine, I left the default selection to "use MJ library on this machine" (not exact wording) - I did not select the other option where you specify the library.

The only other semi-unusual things are:

1) I un-installed the last released 7.0 version before installing the 8.0 version on the server.  Not a single problem encountered.
2) I have a web server already using port 80 on the machine.  MJ is automatically using port 81.  This seems to work as I can connect to it.

I will get the exact messages when I get home, but the server shows a connection, etc, and then a request for the library.  I think the last message was about the private thread, but I will have to double-check that.

I will turn off my other server and let MJ use port 80 and see if that works.

There is a possibility that the database is not updated to version 8 database. MJ does not update the v7 database automatically when you install v8. It will only do that if you made some changes to the database itself. Try to do some modification to the database first and try sharing again.

KingSparta,

Thanks for sharing your MediaServer.  I was able to connect and stream without problem.

That points to the MediaServer on my side as the problem (and not the client; no big surprise).  Is the any way to tell what the MediaServer thinks is in the MediaLibrary?  The PlayLists and SmartLists make it across, but the MediaLibrary is always empty.  I was hoping to see more info on the MediaServer side, but there is not alot there...

Chris,
Your server side database might still be an old version database if you upgraded from MJ7 and did not modify the database afterwards. Try make some modification to that database using MJ8 and try sharing again.

I am new to MJ and have only used version 8.0.293, so its not an upgrade issue.  I am wondering if something in my MediaLibrary is off/corrupted that only affects MediaServer...

KingSparta,
Just tried Media Server for the first time with the address you posted above and it works great ... sort of. I keep crashing at the same spot on "Blue Collar" by "Bachman Turner Overdrive". I think it's at the same spot. It might be me but you might want to check it. Some others played all the way through.
How private is all this? If I post my address, will I then be vulnerable to my own ignorance. I've got good stuff, too. Is it OK for us to swap addresses? If it's safe, this could be fun listening to other stuff that I don't have. I haven't heard "Blue Collar" in 25 years. I forgot how good it was. Usually when you hear BTO, you hear that crappy radio stuff.

I downloaded a sample MP3 file from the web.  It was stored in my Temorary Internet folder and played through MJ.  I then started MediaServer and connected to it.  Voila!  It showed up in the Media Library list!  I was so happyNext Page  But then I looked to see the rest of my music; it wasn't there.

I've only used version 8.0.293 of MJ.  I've reinstalled twice.  Nothing seems to work.  Any other ideas?  Is there a way to have the database rebuild itself?

Thanks,

Chris,

I am still having the same problem myself.  I turned off my other server so now MJ is using port 80.  I can connect, but still get an empty file list.  My error messages are:

06/17/02 20:29:30 - Initializing server.
06/17/02 20:29:31 - Server initialized
06/17/02 20:29:31 - sharer ready to accept connections
06/17/02 22:00:37 - received a connection

06/17/02 22:00:37 - received a connection
06/17/02 22:00:37 - ready for another connection
06/17/02 22:00:37 - request for library
06/17/02 22:00:38 - sharing thread exiting

Like you said, the "sharing thread exiting" is pretty ominous.

Next I tried to do something that would modify the database since my database was built with version 7.  I renamed two of my albums (hopefully that was enough to trigger whatever Raymond hoped it would do).  I still cannot see any files.

For what it's worth, I have never had it work and thus my maximum bandwidth number has always been zero.

Any ideas anybody?

"Sharing thread exiting" seems to be pretty standard. I get it every day when I activate the server. Don't have the foggiest what it means, but my Server works smoothly.

Nothing much else to contribute. Sorry.

Chris, Charles
Some file types cannot be streamed and thus filtered out by MJ. Chris mainly have .wma and .cda files and Charles have all .wav files. Those files cannot be streamed so it is not visible under MJ. You could convert your files to mp3 or ogg.

If you convert, you may want to set up a second library just for sharing.  Here's what I did.

I have a directory called c:\music that has the original files and is used by the default directory.

I have a second directory called c:\music2 that is for the mp3 files that I use with Media Server.  I set up a second library called "shared" and imported the files from c:\music into it.

Then I convert these files in the second library, saving them as mp3 in the second directory.  When you do this BE SURE you don't remove the originals (unless you want to).

Try a few files before you try a lot so you can learn from your mistakes.

In Media Server options, you then need to tell Media Server to use the library from the second directory.

Yikes!  WMA files can't be streamed?  Is that a limitation of MJ or a technical limitation of WMA?

The reason I ask is that I just ripped about 120 albums.  I'd hate to have to start over and I'm concerned that CD Audio -> WMA 96k -> MP3 might not sound so hot...

Been there lately? That's where "Help" in Media Server sends you. Never did figure that out. But anyhow, it's different and new ... at least I'VE never seen it before.

192.168.x.x is definitely a private address.  The USB modem is the "router" and should have its own IP address that the rest of us should be able to see.  Try running "ipconfig" at a command prompt for Win2000 or XP, or "winipcfg" for Win98/ME.  You should see 2 adapters: your network card and the modem.  Tell us what the modem's IP address is.  Not sure if we will be able to get in but it couldn't hurt to try.

Gotta get some sleep.  It's 1 am here...

I have the same question as Chris about wav files:  Can they not be streamed because of a technical limitation or because the functionality is not present in MJ?  Is there any chance this functionality will be added to MJ?

I use wav files for my 320|PLS| albums because:

1) there is no loss in fidelity
2) it's how I am archiving my music collection (CD's do not last), and
3) all these compression formats like MP3, WMA, etc, may not be supported 10 years from now while raw PCM will be.

I can use Windows Media Player to play my wav files across a 100 Mbit network without any problem (I realize this probably isn't actual 'streaming' since the entire file could be loaded into memory initially), so it seems MJ could do the same.

As 400 GB hard drives will be available by Christmas of 2003, it will suddenly seem silly to compress music into any format.  The only reasons to do this will be to get more music onto a portable player or to stream it over the internet.

If I want to use a lossless audio file format that MJ can stream (with or without compression), which format should I use?

Is the MJ music server capable of streaming the APE format?

I Think The Answer Is Yes Since It Did under Music01, However Not To Good Over The Internet But Local Lan Would Be Ok.

Ok, then creating a duplicate library in the APE format would work.  I don't plan to stream this over the internet.  However, now I will have two libraries.  When I change one, the other is instantly out-of-date.  Avoiding that scenario is the whole reason I want to use the media server in the first place.  Maybe I'm back to manually copying the playlists, config files, etc, between the machines periodically and sharing the hard disk song files directly.  That's the brute force approach.

I'd still like to know if there is a big hurdle to support the streaming of wav files from the media server.  Is this a licensing problem similar to the Sony ATRAC/3 problem?

You don't have to duplicate the library.  You can share your primary library.

APE and WAV are the SAME in terms of quality/sound.  Bit for bit, the playback is identical.

APE will stream in MJ and will work if the network is fast.  It takes about 1Mbps.  Should work on most LAN's.

You Can Convert All The Wav Files To APE, And Back To Wav Without Loss. I Guess JimH Confermed That APE Will Stream.

Matt From J River Is The APE Expert He Created The Format, And Has A Web Site To Support It. I Think The Link Is At The Plugin Page To The APE Site.

The site is here:

What KingSparta said is true.  You could convert the same file back and forth and it would never change.  It's like a zip file in that respect.

JimH/KingSparta,

Thanks for the info.  So, I will definitely consider converting my entire collection to APE and using it solely as my master library to get the music to other machines in my house in a lossless format.  One more question...sorry if I'm driving you crazy:  Is there any noticeable performance difference when APE files are played with MJ versus wav files?  Since the de-compression must take cpu cycles, I am wondering if there is any delay at the beginning of playing a track in particular.  In case it matters, I am running a Pentium 4 at 1.4 GHz with 384MB's of memory.

I will read about APE at the website.
