video files wont play [solved]
« on: April 16, 2011, 02:49:59 am »

i'm using haali media splitter
divx codec
ac3filter
enhanced video renderer

i have some .avi files and .mkv files that arent playing.
these are the only two video formats i currently possess.
sometimes i can fastforward and the video image appears, but it wont play.
the screen loads up, but the counter remains at zero.

**edit**
i also have a .wmv video that wont play (recorded from webcam)

**edit**
the sample rate changes, i can hear the speakers make the usual *hiss* .. as well as the soundcard's relay clicks as it does when changing the sample rate.

i just went into video options and manually set everything from automatic for .wmv
the file plays now.
but .avi and .mkv files still wont play.
i've already uninstalled and re-installed.

i have some .avi files that dont have a thumbnail picture.. and two of them say 0 minutes duration (not true)

**edit**
i was messing around with some of the 'other filters'
i already had 'divX 6.9.2. codec' checked.. but i checked all of the divX codec entries and the ac3filter entry.
the .avi files work now.
seems as though the additional filters made a difference.

but i still have these .mkv files that wont play.
for instance, i have some short animated films from 'pixar'
they are about 10 minutes or less @ 720p

i just imported the videos into the library and thumbnails started to show up.
i clicked on one with a thumbnail and it started to play.. but i pressed the stop button so i could finish my forum post.
now the program has frozen.

restarted the program.. it looks as though any of the videos that dont have a thumbnail are not playing.

**edit**
rebuild thumbnail doesnt appear to be working.

It sounds like a DirectShow filter problem.   Start here:

Installing CCCP usually works.

What version do you have?  Which build?  Have you tried MC16?

i've read that page THREE times already.
it says what filters go where and why.
for instance.. needing to split the audio from the video to allow the output pin to connect with the input pin of the decoder, and then the output pin of that decoder to the appropriate piece of hardware.
i get that its a form of organizing and process.

version 15
build 15.0.174

i didnt try build 16 because i am unaware of the build's functional state.
meaning, i dont know if there are often occuring problems that are being resolved.. or if the software designers are simply looking for rare or invalid combinations that arent working as they should.
i wanted to avoid any often occuring crashes when using the generally common filters/settings.
my plan to pay for the program means i need to know if the program is compatible and if the user interface/controls are 'friendly'

i uninstalled divX and reinstalled it.. hoping that might avoid any need to change codec.
i'd really prefer using the divX codec.. but i am willing to install CCCP again to inform of any changes.

as it stands now, i used the divX plugin once before and it worked.. except the audio and video was out of sync.
and i tried to use the latency compensation within ac3filter.. but i might have done it wrong.
i think i read 'you have to stop and restart the playback for the settings to take affect'
i didnt stop the movie while making adjustments.. i thought i seen some change.
but i would be willing to do it again for reference.

anyways..
the movie played with divX once, and it isnt playing again.
its the same file and the same version of the codec.
i suppose i will try CCCP.. but that doesnt change the problem of my desired codec being used (and working or not).

i'm going to go ahead and try CCCP while i wait for a response.
maybe that will give me functionality to the divX codec again?  ::)

**edit**
for what its worth, i also tried to reinstall media center.

**edit**
i found the problem.
the divX demuxer was conflicting with haali media splitter.
since i couldnt choose the divX demuxer in the source filter list, there was nothing working when choosing haali media splitter or automatic.
after i unregistered the divX demuxer.. the haali media splitter worked.

i had used CCCP before.. and i read that the program turns off filters to prevent conflict.
but after uninstalling everything, i suppose i re-created the conflict and had yet to do anything about it.

sorry for wasting your time.

**edit**
the rebuild thumbnails function now works too.
