Digital Camera Autoplay does not work when MC15 is running
« on: December 27, 2010, 01:20:14 pm »

Hi,

I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 software for my image editing needs. I like to use its import mechanism as it is tighly integrated into the software and it works well. Whenever I have MC15 (.171 version on Windows7 64-bit) open, the automatic import mechanism stops working (which is supposed to run automatically when I connect the camera to the PC). It seems that MC15 is grabbing the Autoplay event for the drive that gets mounted and hence the Adobe photoshop import mechanism never ends up working.

When MC15 is running, if I open "My Computer" and right-click on the drive for the digital camera and select "Open Autoplay" - nothing happens. If I close MC15 and do the same, Autoplay works as it should.

The same happens anytime when I insert a USB hard drive or a SD memory card into my PC. Is there any way to stop making MC15 interfere with Autoplay?

Thanks,
Osho

Sorry, but this is not configurable.  You will have to close Media Center if you want to use another program to import from your camera or phone via autoplay.

Seriously? This is way too much of "taking over user's computer" type of behavior. Particularly, considering that MC15's own import capabilities are not really up-to-the mark.
I tried using MC15's import capability but it did not work as well as I expected. Here are the issues I encountered.

  • It did not auto-launch! If MC15 insists on taking over autoplay control it should auto-launch its import function for the digital camera, shouldn't it?
  • MC15 did not import the raw files and avchd video files - even after I added the file extensions manually in the type of files to look for (.arw for RAW file for my camera and .mts for avchd video files in my case)
  • MC15 cannot organize in folder structures such as yyyy/mm/dd - based on the shot date - which is my preferred way of organizing.
  • Most importantly, MC15 cannot recognize which files have already been imported and hence creates duplications.

Thanks,
Osho

Are there any other work-arounds to make MC15 not grab all the autoplay events? Is there a feature I can disable in the Options?

Thanks,

Autoplay settings are part of Windows.  Please try a Google search.

Setting the appropriate filetypes in MC options would do it, but I don't think that's what you want.

I don't think that the issue is that Autoplay is not working well in Windows. If MC15 is closed then all Autoplay events work as expected. I connect a camera/insert a SD card and appropriate dialog box comes up or the previously selected autoplay action is executed.

The issue is that when MC15 is running, it seems to grab all Autoplay events. So when I connect a camera/insert a SD card, nothing happens. MC15 shouldn't overtake all autoplay events - only the ones that user has asked it to (e.g. CD/DVD insertion in my case).

Like I said, Media Center disables some auto-play events.  This is not configurable.

Yes, I got that. My point is that this is way over-the-top taking over control of the user's computer.

Can we get this changed? Why is this necessary?
