smartlist OR rules
« on: January 14, 2011, 07:57:00 am »

I'm pretty sure there used to be an option you could deselect to make rules in smartlists 'AND' or 'OR', but no matter how I edit a smart list I can't seem to figure out how to make the rules 'OR'.

from the search field, this works just fine:
genre=metal or genre=heavy or genre=hard or genre=punk

Shows me everything from any of these genres. When I make a smartlist with 4 lines, nothing shows because nothing is found with all those genres.

How do I go about making a smartlist rules work as 'OR'?

Cheers.

This is great to know.
I just started using smartlists and couldn't figure that out either.
As a work around i was making smartlist groups with an individual smartlist for each rule.
I'm glad i read this before i got too carried away.

Thanks for pointing that out, but Wow! That needs a change  :o

They should make little icons there to make it obvious we can click there. Better tooltip would help as well :)

Cheers.

Interface problem
« Reply #4 on: January 14, 2011, 03:29:08 pm »

A nice ‘hidden’ feature, probably not the best in interface design.
I tried
All the work by Beethoven having sonata in the album title plus all the works by Schubert having piano in the album title.

I couldn’t get this to work using the interface.
Hand typing the expression solved it
Code: [Select]
(([Composer]=[Schubert, Franz /(1797 - 1828/)] and [Album]="piano") or ([Composer]=[Beethoven, Ludwig van /(1770-1829/)] and [Album]="sonata"))But in the interface it looks a bit funny

I wonder if it is possible to implement this type of queries  using the interface

I like the way Retrospect (a backup program, created by Dantz, now owned by Roxio) handles this, but the UI could use a little help.  It uses "OR", Includes and Excludes plus indentation for AND.  The screen shot shows one of my Selectors, which are used to define a sets of files.

The dialog is very easy to use for simple rules. I think it's basic form has to retain that simplicity, or more confusion would result. Maybe the default AND brackets should always be there—maybe in blue as a hint they can be changed. Or some other visual cue that AND/OR brackets can be set.

As Vincent points out, it's also helpful to realize the expression can be constructed using the interface, or entered directly in the "Import/Export" box. If having difficulty with one, you can use the other—and then see the result in the first. I use that far more often as an expression editor than I do as an import/export tool. It should be turned into one (i.e., by including the usual insert field/function tools) and called "Expression Editor - Import/Export." That would make it more apparent it can be used for either purpose.

If I toggle the opening brackets I can choose (,[ and ... a couple of times.
The closing ones allow for ), ], )), ])
Lack of space for the opening brackets?

I've been a MC (and smartlist) user for years and only found this feature recently after doing a few forum searches.

I think the GUI of this should be re-worked, maybe with the words "AND" & "OR" and (), to be like an equation easy to set (pretty much like the advanced import/export view but more graphical and without care about the correct spell, etc)
