Multizone synchronous picture/video playback
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:10:37 pm »

Hi there!

Week ago I'd got new task to change old paper paintings with new digital LED panels in our office  ::).
The idea is in an ability to play slideshows or videos and moreover to control overall remotely.  I suppose that it will loop slideshow basically. There are two zones in the office where panels (10 pcs) planned to be mounted.

Looking thru cost-effective solutions I came upon DLNA technology.   Since I'm new with DLNA so I had to spent some time to look into it. The biggest problem was to find right media server satisfied the requirements.

J River MC looks fine with me cause:
- can act as server and controller
- has multizone playback
- has synchronous zone playback
- has webremote control

This is my choice as for HW :
10 LED panels-  Samsung UE46С5000 (DLNA certified)
10 WD TV live boxes as controllable renderers (for each panel)
1 Standalone PC with J River MC as media server  and controller in one.

The suggestion to use  WD TV came to me after reading this topic DLNA TV's where discussed let say limited ;) Samsung DLNA support.

I’d looked over this forum to understand is my solution real but several of my questions are open still:

#1 - Does MC support multizone picture/video playback?

#2 - Does MC support multizone picture/video playback synchronously?

#3 - Is it possible to bind several zones into one group for further sync playback?

#4 - Does MC support up to 10 renderers?

I'll be very appreciated for any comments/suggestions

Thanks in advance!

On 1 and 2, yes and yes.

On 3, maybe.  DLNA devices don't sync very precisely.

On 4, probably.  I don't know if it has been tried.

I would buy one of each for testing first.

Any number of renderers (or other types of zones) is supported.  The only limitation would be processing power of the server machine if many renderers were simultaneously requesting files that required bandwidth and/or conversion.

Thank you for extra info, Matt. Yes, I take into account server efficiency.

Me too  ;) LAN overload produced by sync HD video streaming on 10 panels, that confuses me  ::)
