Would it be possible to add the "Group By" function (the same one that exists for the list pane) to the thumbnail pane?

Then you group the thumbnails based on a library field. E.g., For audio, they could be grouped by [Release Type] = Album, Single, Compilation, etc.

( It would also be nice to be able to set a fixed group ordering instead of relying on a forward or reverse alphabetical sort, but that's a different feature request. ;-)
