Really stupid question...

but I simply cannot find the answer: how do you turn of the "fade out" when skipping from one song to the next?

Player->Playback Options->Audio->Track Change->Switch Tracks...

Tools -> Options -> Audio takes you to the same place.

These settings are saved separately per-zone.
