having an issue with Smartlist/Playlist sequence
« on: March 30, 2011, 09:45:32 pm »

1. Look at any playlist in your library. Take note of the Sequence (i.e. the order of everything in that playlist).
2. Now create a smartlist, and click Add New Rule. In the drop-down, select the playlist from Step 1.
3. Add New Modifier. select Sort By, click Add, select Sequence. Click Ok.

Notice the Sequence of the smartlist does not match the Sequence of the playlist.

What is it doing? How is it coming up with it's Sequence?

I would like to know how to make the Sequence of a smartlist the exact same as a specific playlist. I'm clearly missing something. Hopefully something really simple.

i dreamt last night that someone other than me responded to this thread.

But it was just a dream... :-)

I believe the sequence number is not a track-based field, and therefore, your smartlist cannot sort by the sequence value set in the referenced playlist.  The tracks in the playlist will be included, and you can sort based upon track data.

I don't know how one can sort a new smartlist based upon the sequence number of an existing playlist.  See, it was just a dream.

You're welcome.

Btw. It was not my intention to be glib, just having fun w/words.  Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will have some solution for you.

this all started with the idea of sorting my albums based on their ratings. to have a personal top 10, 25 100 whatever. well, that part is easy, but creating a smartlist that will play tracks from them sequentially isn't. i.e, to listen to my top 10 from 2011 for example, starting with #10, then #9 etc going all the way to #1...my own personal casey casem radio show. it makes for a great listening experience.

i've tried several different ideas with a lot of failure.

the on that works for me is this:

first, simply create a field called "Ranking". then, make an album view that shows my albums in order of rank (which is easy), and enter data in the fields based on where the albums rank. it makes them set in stone which sort of sucks. i have to change them all the time, but whatever. at least i can tell you what my favorite albums are from whatever year based on the facts.

Sounds like a good solution.

I suppose this is the problem inherent in subjective rankings and categorizations such as "Top 10".  The ranking may vary over time with mood and age.

I wonder if a combined field, such as Year and Ranking would be useful.
