Disc #s and Tracks #s
« on: May 18, 2011, 12:49:22 am »

I'm an iTunes emigrant still trying to figure out a few things with MC. One issue is the Disc and Track number information. In iTunes one can (optionally) assign a Disc total and a Track total for any given album, and iTunes will show this as Disc X of Y and Track X of Y. I find that information useful and have judiciously tagged all my albums accordingly.

But I've not found a way of displaying that information in MC, either when ripping and tagging new CDs with multiple discs, or when importing music files that were ripped and tagged with iTunes.

Any pointers would be very much appreciated!

The "total number" tags are not supported in MC. They have been requested sometimes, but apparently adding them has not been on the developer's to-do list. Personally I'd like to have them.

You can add custom user tags for that purpose and fill the values, but they would not provide any connection to the smart complete album detection feature in MC*. In addition, custom user tags would not read and write the same file tags as some other programs in case the tag format inside the files is x/y (i.e. the values are in the same file tag) or if the tag name differs from actual the tag header inside the file.

MC has been designed to preserve the possibly existing "totals" in the file tags when it applies tag changes even though these tag values are not currently usable inside MC.

EDIT

* It would be great if MC could detect a missing last track of the album by checking a "total number of tracks" field. Perhaps it could also detect a missing disc if a "total number of discs" value would be available.

Many thanks for your thorough reply. Let's hope it does get implemented at some point. While Totals is clearly not a really high priority, it's not as if it's just an iTunes thing. It's also supported by products like dBpoweramp and Easy CD-DA.

As Alex said, these value are preserved if they are in the tag.

We would like to add a database field for them and import them in a future version.

This is an old thread, but could someone with a file that has the total number of tracks and total number of albums in the tag provide a copy to matt at jriver dot com?

Thanks.

Thanks for the files.

Next build will have a Total Tracks field filled from MP3, MP4, and on CD ripping.

I assume it'll look like this for the Track field? What about the Total Discs field? Example is also in the screenshot link posted.

I didn't do Total Discs because it didn't seem very important.  If enough people feel otherwise, please say.

Yes, very important to me. So count me down as a +1.

I'll have to figure out a way to add back the total tracks fields automatically (since they were long removed by MC's update tags from library feature) using some sort of expression to count the total tracks per disc number, hmmm. The total discs field could perhaps be handy there too.

Ask and you shall receive.

Next build:
NEW: Added a 'Total Discs' field to the library, which is updated from MP3 and MP4 files.

Why thank you very much, Matt.

P.S. Will it update FLAC files too?

If you can mail me a sample FLAC file that includes the total number of tracks and albums, then sure.
