Is there any help in the Wiki on how to use the rules for display in Theatre View.

I have Television then Categories then on the right pane I have Sub Categories = TV New and TV watched, then Genre

I would like to have Series eg Good Wife, click into that to be offered new or watched, is this possible?

I have been trying to do this for days but cant get it to work.

As nobody replied to this I would like to say that after many days of fiddling I have worked out how to get the filters to show what I want.

I have another question.

I have the series filter set to display all of my TV series but notice that if I add another TV show I have to go and tick this in the filters. Is this correct or is there an automated way to do this?

Hay maid,

please describe how do you have set up your theatre views. And what do you mean with "..tick this in the filter"? Generally it is not necessary to do further adjustments on the theatre view after adding a new show, provided that the data fields of the new files have the proper values and fit to the settings of the theatre view.

When setting up the rules for series it goes: series is and there is a list of all the series that you have in your library that have to be ticked.

If at a later time you add a new series this does not automatically become ticked.

I have to go back into that rule and do so.

I would do a screen dump but I dont know how to put it here.

What is it you're trying to include (or exclude) from the view, and what is the purpose of this rule?

Normally, a view for series would simply include all series, and that would be accomplished with a rule based on [Media Sub Type] or [Filename (path)] (e.g., starting with "D:\Video\Series"). Such a view might then include Categories like [Genre] and watched status (e.g. using the expression If(IsEqual([Last Played], never played), Not Watched, Watched)).

I have Categories TV Sub Categories TN or TW for TV new or watched.

Media Sub type is TV show

Series whatever the show is eg The Good Wife.

In theatre view my rules are as follows

Series
Sub Categories is TN TW
Series whatever the show

If this does not explain how I have it set I can send screen dumps. ? how do i put the screen dump here.

Please try to follow what rick.ca said in his post above. Try it out and see if it fixes your problem. You've set something up wrong and it makes no sense for us to try and fix a mistake when you've been given the solution - start again and all will be well.

That's the point.... if set up correctly, you don't need to add new series, but it seems like you have to based on several of your posts. Can't you just try it? Get it working and there will be time to explain later.

Do you really want a totally seperate view for each series?

I do a similar thing, but I just leave off the last level that you have, the series.
By not defining a rule for this, JRiver will group like with like automatically and you can drill down into each series.

By building a too-specific rule, you've got yourself in a situation where you have to keep making other equally specific rules.

There was a bug in a recent version of MC - are you using Red October HQ? If so, use the standard RO, and I think your crash-on-stop bug will go away. The next public release will have this fixed.

I'm not sure if you'll like this idea since you're finding tagging tedious, but it would be straightforward to create a user-defined tag in each file for holding the show type. Put in it whatever you want (documentary,drama,comedy,whatever) and then create a view in theater mode to filter for/against that tag.

That will let you categorize and view your shows absolutely any way you want. But all the filtering stems from tagging. Filter against the tags that are already in the files, or add new tags to suit your purpose.

Instead of using MC for tagging you could use PVD (www.videodb.info) for this. With PVD you could import data from several movie related websites (e.g. IMDB, TheTVDB) and update the data to MC with the plug-in "PVDimport". Then you could use for example the genre field to adjust your filters.

The Media Type and Media Sub Type are fixed fields so you cannot edit them, but as mentioned before you can create a new field with different values and use these in your filters...

Yes I understand that and I am trying different things.

I am at the moment stuck on separating the display or TV shows and Docos as I dont want them listed together.

What I have at the moment works quite well only like I said If I add another TV show I have to add it to my series rule. By the way is there a way to tick multiple radio buttons at once?

Similar to you, I also separate the documentaries from the movies and TV show in a separate root item. My documentaries (zhese could be TV shows or single movies) have in the [genre] field the type "documentary". Then you could add a second rule. My rules look like that:

Movies: [Media Sub Type] is [Movie] and [Genre] does not contain "documentary"
TV Shows: [Media Sub Type] is [TV Show] and [Genre] does not contain "documentary"
Documentaries: [Genre] contain "documentary"

If you have stored your documentaries in a separate folder you could - instead of the genre-rule - use the path field, e.g.
TV Shows: [Media Sub Type] is [TV Show] and [file (path)] does not start with "D:\documentary\"

When you do as minolotus suggests (or not), delete this rule. It's unnecessary, and will continue to cause you problems.

Do you refer to your first pic? If so, what does TN, TP and TW stand for, respectively what should be the filter criteria?

You need to add a ~~view item (I am not sure about the naming)~~ category: Select your "series" item. On the right under the the details are the ~~view items~~ categories listed in hierarchic order. The top item should be your "sub category". Use the add-button on the right and select the library field "series".

That's a perfect place to start. Now just add the categories you would like to categorize them by. Based on what you've said, that would include...

Watched and Not watched: Add the Expression Category If(IsEqual([Last Played], never played), Not Watched, Watched).
Series: Assuming you've tagged it, just add the Library field [Series].

Note these Categories are entered in the big box under Details. They are NOT Rules for file display.

Select your "sub category"-category in the details field, press edit and set the sorting in the lower part of the form. If you changed the sorting rules under the "set rules for file display" section, it would not work as these settings affect the sorting of the items within the categories only (e.g the movies or TV episodes).

This should work in the similar way. Select the genre category on the right and set the sorting in the edit form.
