J. Rivers as Default Media Center?
« on: June 08, 2011, 06:19:50 pm »

I recently got a cheap usb remote off of eBay, works great for $7, mainly just wanted it for the volume control but its not terrible at all for what I needed.

I've used J Rivers for quite some time now and love it. So much to the point that when I bought this computer I never even bothered installing and setting up Windows Media Player. The remote has a button on it called "Media Center" and when I hit it, J Rivers opened. A few days ago, a friend of mine came over with audio files of his bands music, and when he played them, the Windows Media Player installation came up and he hit install without asking me. Now, since WMP is now installed, every time I hit the "Media Center" button, it opens up WMP. I've gone through all the default settings, and I have also tried uninstalling it, but I have learned that WMP 11 is integrated into the system and u cant get rid of it. When I open say an mp3 or a video file it opens in JR, but when i hit that "Media Center" button, I get WMP. In short, I have tried to the best of my knowledge, and I don't know what to do about it now. any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I don't care whether I delete WMP, I just would really like that Media Center button to open the media center I actually use... its very annoying
Thanks!!

Try this:
Options > Theater View > Disable Windows Media Center

FYI, I also have "Disable Windows Media Center" checked, and JRiver MC does NOT start when I use the green button.

If I uncheck it, Windows MC will start on green button.  If I check it, the green button does nothing.

This is probably related to the other thread I have going with JimH.  I just thought I'd chime in here so it was noted that getting JRiver MC to start with the green button is not a mortal lock even if you have that option checked.  Not sure if my problem is the same as Steve's.

Try running Media Server on Windows Startup.

hi everyone, thanks for the suggestions.

i have tried both checking the "Disable Windows Media Center" and running the Media Server on startup. Still when i hit the button i get WMP. Since it worked before WMP was installed i dont understand why its so hard to get it to work again. one of microsofts many mysteries i guess. Any ideas are welcome and thanks everyone for the quick responses!

You could try just turning Windows Media Player (or Center, or both) off.  Assuming you're on Windows 7, hit Start and type "windows features" and hit enter.  Then uncheck the box:
