MJ8 with Linux backend works!
« on: March 31, 2003, 01:43:28 pm »

Just for fun I thought I would try playing some .APE files from a linux samba share.  And what do you know, it worked!

So..

This weekend I built a 4*80 gig RAID5 array in Gentoo linux, shared it with Samba, and mapped a drive letter to it from windows.

Mj8 has been playing my music without a hitch ever since  :)

Just thought I would share, in case anyone had an inkling to try something like this out.

NOW.. if Mj8 player would only work in Linux, I'd have no good reason to run windows anymore :)

Thanks for reporting on this.  Sounds like a nice setup.

I would love to go full tilt for Linux, but I don't think our customers would follow.  In the meantime, we try to follow our customers.

It is a really well respected set of source that provides SMB (Symbolic Message Block?) services on Linux & Unix and probably more.  That's the protocol that Windows uses to provide network drives.

"Jeremy likes pizza", I seem to recall.  The author is Australian, and he's right up there with Linus Torvaald.

I see so he is using Linux as a server (holding his files), and windows to load and play MC9

Not sure I see an an advantage for doing this would not having a raid5 run on windows do the same thing?

Anyone?

to me it seems all the hype for Lynux is gone, go to best buy and see how many programs you can buy for Lynux?

I am not sure you can even find Lynux OS and red hat is made up the street here from me.

Here are the advantages as I see them:

Windows: Won't do RAID5 without expensive hardware
Windows Server: Will do RAID5, but Server is expensive.
Linux: Will do RAID5, free.

Windows Server: Won't nativly support expanding software RAID5 setups.  Add on tools to allow this are very expensive.

Linux: Will allow for expanding RAID5 setups on the fly with a set of free downloadable tools.

Windows: Been there, done that.
Linux: Was a fun expiriment, and I learned alot in the process of getting things up and running.

Windows: Won't get me chicks.
Linux: Won't get me chicks.

I'm not trying to start a Linux vs. Windows debate.  These are jus the advantages as I saw them.

I just finished 20 hours of monkey's audio "Verify" command on my entire music set.  It came up clean across the board. (There were a few CRC errors detected, but as it turns out, they were there in my windows setup as well.)

None.  And that's the point of Linux.  It's all free.

Hi ShockValue,

I do the same thing at home: linux/samba for the disk storage, and windows accesses it via wireless. You just have to be careful not to have two clients writing to the database at the same time (the second windows machine should mount the samba stuff read-only or use media server).
