What are the pros/cons of the “Quicktime Engine” setting vs the default setting “Automatic” or another setting for the Apple related audio files (alac, m4a, aac, aiff, aif, etc.)? These settings are located in MC16 at File > Options > File Types (under the Audio heading) > Playback Method column.  I am especially interested in the best Playback Method setting for Apple lossless compression (alac) audio files as I play a lot of them.

Note:  I have Quicktime 7.6.9 and MC 16.0.121 installed on my Win7 PC.

Also, are there other settings in MC16 that I should change from default to maximize sound quality of the ALAC, FLAC, and WAV audio files that I play?

Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

You will lose a lot of functions (such as DSP Studio) if you choose Quicktime Engine.  It should only be used as a last resort when you can not get it working in other options.  MC16 can play alac, m4a, aac, aiff, aif, etc. natively, so there is really no reason to choose QT engine.
