Please excuse me if I don't use all the terms correctly as I am new to the world of media servers. 

I have installed J River on a server on my LAN and if I log off of the machine, it stops.  Is there support to make the Media Server run when nobody is logged on?

In MC options, startup, set it to run Media Server on Windows start.

I have version 15 and did check that item but it does not work.  I am using Windows Server 2008.  As soon as I logoff, the server disappears and is not useable.  Any thoughts?

Try starting Media Server via Tools->Advanced Tools->Media Server...

Then you can quit MC.  I haven't tested that this will stay running after you log out.

The options you set earlier should start MC when the system is booted.

I've rebooted my server and it still won't run unless I am logged in.  This is the error message I am getting in my server log: JRWorker.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142).

Any thoughts?

Sorry, I had not actually verified this, but based my answers on the Wiki and docs I've read.  I tested and confirm that MC requires a login to run MC or any of its servers.

You'll need a program that will allow MC to run as a service:

Not a problem.  Do you know of a program that will run MC as a service?  The second link was broken.  The first link did not list any program that will run MC as a service.  Worst come to worst, I suppose I could write one, but if you or anyone knows of a way to do this, that would be very helpful. 

I am actually quite surprised that J River cannot do this as some of the other lesser audio quality media servers do this by default.

Ok, found it.  I also found the link to it here http://www.firedaemon.com/firedaemon-pro.php.

Still blows my mind that a product of the quality of J River does not run as a service given that the media server/NAS market is all about growth.  The reason I have not bought a NAS is that all of them seem to run another server based media server product which is not as feature rich as J River.  I guess if they want to leave all that money on the table, that is their business decision.

I'm still in free trial mode, and will also have a free trial with FireDaemon, but I really don't like cobbling a solution together.  I'm still working on the architecture of my media server setup and that J River does not have a server option is modivating me to expand my search past a network server into a NAS.

JRiver is a couple [five] of hard workin' folks producing the excellent MC and its variants.  They must feel like they are drinking from a fire hose...

1) Download the freeware program file "Pirmasoft RunAsSvc": http://www.pirmasoft.de/runassvc.php
2) Unzip the file and move the file into a new folder on c:\x86 program files
3) Start the program, define a new service "J River Mediacenter as a Service" an set the program file "....\Media Center 16.exe"
4) Open Windows Services (%windir%\system32\services.msc) and choose the new service you had defined
5) Open the GUI and choose the option 'this account'
6) set the account name (e.g. "Administrator") and password, close with OK

Restart the server and check the connection from a client :-)
