MKV file only has sound effects, no vocal
« on: September 21, 2011, 09:55:40 am »

Hi, I have MKV file played on MC16 with RO HQ and hardware accel on. There is only sound effects but no vocal during the movie. My machine is a laptop, i5 2.26GHz with ATI 5650 1GHz memory. I did try to update my drivers from ATI (hope I installed the right one, as the auto detect will kick me back to Acer which only has older drivers) to no avail.

I played the same MKV file on my other machine that has Nvidia card. No problem.

What could be the cause? I did a check on the forum. I think no one has asked yet. Can anyone provide a clue or something I can try? Thanks.

That sounds bizarre!

What audio stream is in the mkv? 5.1 or 2.0? Are you having the same trouble with other files?
Sounds like your center channel is missing. Try rebooting the PC and amp/receiver. Try a channel check file to make sure you can play all channels.

Are you outputing via directsound or asio/wasapi? Is the windows audio mixer set to the correct number of channels?

I had that happen to me too. I ripped a movie and selected the wrong audio track - so all I got was sound effects. I guess in some movies the dialog is done separately from scene/background audio.
I just re-ripped and selected the correct (different) track and everything then worked.

I've had that happen to me a few times. I solved it by changing settings in the audiofilter, ffdshow or ac3filter. It might even be your soundcard settings. What I think was the problem was the movie being in surround, and the soundcard receiving only stereo. Only front left and right channel was being played. Center and surrounds was left out, therefore no or little vocal. Check out your speaker settings, i think I set mine in ffdshow to 'as is'.

This one seems to be cropping up more and more these days, I don't know if our issues are related, but here's some more trouble shooting info for you....

edit --- a link that works would be a bit more helpful...

Hi Sandy, Country B, llafriel, Marko. Thanks for your replies. The MKV file audio is alright as it played well on my other machine. Turns out that in DSP settings under audio, I had set no upmixing and downmixing. It is solved by choosing JRSS surround which is the recommended setting anyway. I am outputting via wasapi event. Going out to my 2 channel DAC.

Marko, thanks for your link. It is very helpful. I changed to JRSS surround before I read the link you paste but that's also what Matt suggested. It works for me. How's your problem coming along? Have you solved it yet?

Morning chew.isaac,

Yes, I'm all sorted now, thanks for asking. I added my fix to the end of that thread for the sake of completeness.

Glad to hear you're happy too.
