How I got .wtv files working in MC
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:44:54 pm »

They haven't worked for a while, I just get an error.  I think Yaobing found the source of the problem, but a fix didn't seem to make it into the latest public.

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=65661.msg440338#msg440338

I like tinkering, so I thought I'd see if i could get them working.  Neither flavor of Red October worked 'stock'.  I tried adding LAV Video and Audio and madVR to see if the 'regular' versions worked, they didn't.  it actually crashed Media Center when i played.  I tried removing filters, and eventually got to my solution.

I have every single file type set to automatic, including verifying the actual filter lists are automatic also.

Then I added 'LAV Audio Decoder' and 'Enhanced Video Renderer' filters to the 'Windows Media Video' file type.  All of my video files currently play.  (I have some cyclic audible dimming on AVI files, but I'm not worried about that right now.)

It uses a long complex filter set, but it works.

During the testing MC crashed a lot.  I eventually noticed that sometimes it crashes before the file plays, but it 'felt' like it was about to play, and trying again, without changing anything, the video would play, then it would play fine every time after that.  it almost feels like it's a timing thing.

I had a shared library running on the server, and my laptop running the client/locked library.  Both played wtv files just fine.  several files, over a bit of time, on both machines.

i came home from work today and wtv files wouldn't play on the laptop, it crashed, several times.  I restarted the machine, it still crashed when I tried to play a wtv file.

I thought it might be because it was running on the client/locked machine (because i couldn't think of anything else), so I closed it, then tested the server machine, and it still worked.  I closed it, opened the laptop as the full access library, and it crashed, but next time it played, and has played them fine since.

I tested my 'maybe it's the client' theory by starting the HTPC as the client, and it still played wtv files; so that's not the cause it seems.

Currently, both machines are playing wtv files fine.  it's been finicky, but it's working.

HA.  Of course, I just went to play a video to grab the filter list it crashed MC :(

restarting and running another file resulted in it playing fine.  it's like switching graphs/filters doesn't happen quickly enough and MC crashes, but next time, it works, and as long as I run wtv files, they all work fine.  if I play one file type and then another file type, it sometimes crashes.  restarting MC usually is enough to get playback again.

anyway, here's the (long and complex) graph that works...

I'm assuming you don't have to deal with content protected .wtv files (like from cable).

correct, just free, OTA signals, both SD and HD content.

Is no one else having problems with .wtv files and RO, or does no one else use WMC to record content?

I record from WMC, but I have no problem with playback with RO HQ. Files are SD and HD.

I did however see a similar problem at some freinds house. They could not play wtv files on their HTPC with MC16. They were using RO Standard.

Thanks.  Interesting.  I believe Yaobing found a bug related to the AC stream, so maybe your hardware or signal is different than mine??  Either way, hopefully this won't be needed for long.  If your friend wants to try this, I'd be interested if it works for them also, but no big deal.

I did find it rather odd to use such a long chain of filters in the solution, but whatever, i just wanna watch some TV :)

I use WMC to record TV, but it is a mix of 'copy freely' and 'copy once' stuff.  Since MC can't handle the 'copy once' stuff it is just easier to keep it all in WMC as opposed to using two separate programs and trying to explain to the family when they should use each one for TV.

It is a bit strange. It must be a hardware difference, allthough my recordings can play on three different PC's with different hardware. My graph is listed below. It looks similar or the same.

yeah, a slow glance thru it, they look the same to me too, except I'm using LAV Audio by adding it, and you're getting this in your graph...

    Filter 'Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder'

I wonder why my system won't play them in RO, but yours will.  Meh, Yaobing found something, so hopefully this info helps him track down the bug.  until then, I can now use MC for watching what WMC puts in the Recorded TV folder for me, which is enough for now.

Yes, let's hope this is enough information to hunt down the bug.

I forgot to add, that all my machines are running Win 7 and my friends machine that can't play wtv files is running Vista.

Depending on the audio content of wtv file, Red October may or may not work currently.  We know what is causing the problem, and are working on a solution.

Here is a simple description of what it is:

Some wtv files would play without sound unless Microsoft DTV-DVD audio decoder is used.  We are therefore forced to use the Microsoft filter.  The problem with the Microsoft filter is that is would not decode AC3 audio in our application.  Instead, it output AC3 as SPDIF bit stream.  This is fine if you have bitstreaming device connected to your computer.  If you can not do bitstreaming, the only way we can make it work for now is to use AC3Filter in conjunction with the Microsoft filter.  This will not work if the user does not have AC3Filter installed.

So here are two simple things you can do, to make it work:

1. If you have a hardware decoder that can decode bitstream of AC3 format, make sure you tell MC to use bitstream.
2. If you do not have such hardware decoder, you can install AC3Filter.

As I mentioned, we are still working on a solution so neither of the above will be required (as Red October is supposed to work "out of box").
