# of files discrepancy
« on: August 14, 2011, 08:26:10 am »

I'm wondering how to reconcile the following discrepancy:  If I ask MC16 (build 145) to show all 'ogg' files the number is 30316 -- however, if I ask Windows 7 to search for all files with extension 'ogg', the number is 29938(??)  The only ways I imagine this happening is:

(1) that MC is showing some tracks more than once (but I would Know why, or how to recognize of find them) ... or,
(2) That MC believe some track should be there, but are not found (but I see no indication of it in the listing) ... or,
(3) some files are in a location other than my library folder (and I'm not sure why this would be)

BTW ... what is the small icon, "one white page on another", that shows in the column where you'd expect to see the yellow/red "file is missing" icon??  I see a number of those, but there are too many to explain the above.

TIA :)

Edit:  Answer ... with respect to #3 above, once I had accounted for podcasts and 2 media streams, the 2 numbers matched   ;D

Maybe files that are no longer on disk, but are still in the library?  Have you checked for missing files within MC?  A smartlist such as:

   [Media Type]=[Audio] [=IsMissing([Filename])]=1 [File Type]=[off]

might help.

Also, you can export a list of those ogg files in text format, just the fullpath name field, and sort that list.  If you know how to get a list of the Search results from Windows, you can sort it and run a diff on the two sorted lists to see which lines are in one but not the other.  If you're not sure how to do this, let us know.

Maybe you are referring to the Stack icon?

I see ... my stacks were apparently created when I converted Library version to an appropriate format and compression for my iPhone.  Which reminds me I need to clean that cache location up.

another thought
are any of these ogg files in a network path?
You could check if it is set to "Protect Network Files"
