Unable to save changes to ID3 tags
« on: May 26, 2002, 09:10:10 am »

Is anybody have any problems savings changes to ID3v2 tags?  Whenever I attempt to save changes I receive the message:

Media Jukebox failed to update the tag information for the following files:

   path\filename

(this happens when the files are in use, read-only, or when tagging has been disabled in MJ's options)

I have confirmed that the files are not in use, they are not read-only, and tagging is enabled in MJ's options.  Might it have something to do with the fact that I do not have administrator rights on my computer?

Version of MJ?

Can you change the tag for ANY single file?  If so, split what you're tagging in half, then in half again, and so on, to find where the problem is.

only when renaming do i get this message when the file is playing.

i do not however understand why MJ does not sop play, rename and start play again.

And even better start play where it had to stop.

I am running 8.0.284 on a Win XP box.  The saving problem does not appear to be related to any single file; it happens on multiple tracks from multiple albums whether I am trying to save changes to a single track or all tracks.  Also, the problem occurs on any track I try to edit regardless of whether MJ is playing that track at the time or not.

Do you have anything else open that may have the files open?  I had a similar problem with images that Windows Explorer had open on XP.

Describe exactly what you do to change a single file.  Maybe we'll see something.

Are they MP3 files?

JimH,

>Do you have anything else open that may have the files open? I had a similar problem with images that Windows Explorer had open on XP

Isn't there a way for Media Jukebox to know what is opened?
Isn't there a way for Media Jukebox to know when it is playing a file, so it can cue tag changes for applying automatically when Media Jukebox know the target file is NOT playing?

Always wondered why the phone companies computers are programmed to mimic a human voice which recites 'You must dial a 1, before dialing this number', rather than just dialing the number with a leading 1 for you.  Seemed stupid at best, and arrogant at worst.

We could change the way MJ works, but we aren't going to for 8.0.  Maybe for the next release.

Lots of things that seem easy take more time than you might think.  And we have to prioritize.

The problem he is having is not with files he is playing (as I understand it).

Yes, the files are MP3s.  I just noticed something very interesting: I do not receive this error message when editing the tags of tracks ripped with other software; it occurs only on tracks ripped with Media Jukebox.

Here is a specific, step-by-step example of what I am doing:

1. Just ripped Moby 18
2. From the Media Playlist, navigated to Moby 18 and selected it
3. Right clicked on "08 Fireworks" and selected "Properties"
4. Changed Genre to Electronic and changed Year to 2002
5. Clicked "Save"
6. Media Jukebox displayed the error message:

Media Jukebox failed to update the tag information for the following files:

         path\filename

(this happens when files are in use, read-only, or when tagging has been disabled in MJ's options)

At the time that I do this, no other applications are running that would have the files in use; I have verified that the file is not read-only.  The following tagging settings in Options are all selected:

         General\Importing & Tagging
Automatically import files into Media Library
Update tags when file info changes
Clear "Recently Imported" playlist on exit

One final point to consider in case it is relevant: This is a full, licensed version of Media Jukebox.  I purchased the license for version 7 and imported it into this version.

I had this problem one time when I ripped a CD in MJ 8.0.2xx with digital secure setting. I know that it shouldn't make any difference, but I simply couldn't edit the ID3 tags at all (same error message). I deleted the files, re-ripped on default setting, and then no problem. Never had a problem with ID3 tags in MJ before or since.

I remember having a similar problem after moving files from cd-r/rw back to the hard drive.

Look at the file attributes and make sure that 'dem files aren't "read only".

I've experienced this quite a few times, however, the ID3v2 tags were saved, even though the error message disputed that they were saved.  When I return to file properties and click save a 2nd time, I don't receive the error message.

msmith,
Try ripping, finishing, removing the CD, then going to Media Library, find the artist, the album, and then edit the properties.

JimH,

I tried your suggestion, but to no avail.  I also tested out a couple of other variations on the process that might help you track down the problem:

1. After re-ripping Moby 18 via Media Jukebox, I fired up WMP 7 and added the tracks to WMP's media library.  Interestingly, WMP showed blanks for the new tracks' tag information implying to me that it was unable to read the tags written by Media Jukebox.  I edited the tag information in WMP and exited WMP.  I then restarted Media Jukebox and was able to successfully edit the tags in Media Jukebox.

2. After deleting Moby 18 and deleting the entries from the media libraries of Media Jukebox and WMP, I re-ripped the album with WMP.  I then fired up Media Jukebox and was able to edit the tags without any problem.

These two tests imply to me that there is a problem with how Media Jukebox is saving the tags -- but, of course, I'm not an IT person...I don't even play one on TV.

BTW - I just installed 8.0.285 RC and the re-ran these scenarios; unfortunately, the problem persists in this version.

From #1 above, it sounds like MJ is creating ID3v2 tags, which WMP may not read (not sure).  Then you create ID3v1 tags in WMP, which MJ also can read.  This isn't a bug.

Are you certain you have MJ set to use ID3V1?

Could you report all your MP3 plugin options from:

MJ -> Settings -> Plug-in Manager -> Input -> MP3 -> Configure

Thanks.

Some questions on your rip setup:
1. are you using the internal Lame mp3 encoder, or the VBR version, or an external mp3 encoder?
2. what are the encoder settings (quality, custom command line, etc.)
3. do you have rip/encode simultaneous checked? how about normalize?
4. in Device Settings, are "get cover art", or "eject cd after ripping" checked?
5. which copy mode for ripping (digital large buffer, digital secure, etc.)

Matt & JohnT,

Here are the settings you asked about:

MP3 PLUGIN OPTIONS
- Tag Saving: ID3v1 Mode set to "Save (create if necessary)"; ID3v2 Mode set to "Save (create if necessary)"
- Tag Analysis: "Ignore ID3v2 tags during analysis" is unchecked

ENCODING
- I am using the internal LAME mp3 encoder
- Quality is set at 160kbps; under the "Advanced" settings for the Encoding Options, Quality is set to "Normal"
- MJ is set to rip and encode simultaneously
- MJ is not set to normalize
- The copy mode is set to "Digital large buffer"

Today I was able to persuade my IT folks to give me Administrator rights to my computer.  I reinstalled MJ8 with Administrator rights, and the problem with editing ID3 tags went away.
