Tags don't update

I have spent a lot of time editing and organizing all my mp3 files by genre....using MJ8.  I would like my edits to "stick" so that I can move the files to other machines and import them.   I have the "update tag info when file changes" setting checked, and I have tried selecting all the files at once, choosing the "update all files" option in the listbox and having it update all my tag info.  However, if I load my library in windows media player as a way to check the tags, I can see that many of the genre tags are not updated.  How can I ensure that my genre edits stick?  Is there a limit to length of the genre field that prevents updating?  (for example, I have one genre "Folk, Singer-Songwriter".
