R.E.M. say goodnight

22/09/2011

After 31 years and 15 studio albums, seminal alt-rockers R.E.M. have decided to call it a day.

The band announced the split in a brief statement posted on their website on Wednesday, September 21.

"We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart," they said. "The time just feels right."

R.E.M. rose to prominence in the early '80s as pioneers of the post-punk/alt-rock scene. Their three-decade legacy has been defined by an ability to balance critical acclaim with commercial success. At the twilight of their career, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers now join an elite group of artists who managed to enjoy prosperity, longevity and integrity throughout their career.

In true R.E.M. fashion, their demise was anything but typical — just a brief note filled with gratitude and humility. For their final act as a band, the trio plan to release a greatest hits compilation, slated for release later this year.
