Video Thumbnails Improvment
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:21:31 am »

Would it be possible to implement a thumbnail type system for video files like those found on porn tubes. I don't know what they are my guess is an animated gif.

Users could set how many frames they wish to be included in said image and how many seconds are to be between each frame. Then whilst hovering over the file the animation would begin..

Or maybe J River could encode a small resolution, and small duration clip of each file that would play when hovered over. I think the latter would be more difficult to implement but would be really cool. If this feature is possible either way, it will make me happy.

Doesn't J River work kind of like HTML anyway, using XML??

I think this feature would spice up the video section of J River, for videos I don't think a static image per video file is enough..

I like the idea of using an anigif as a thumbnail.  It would be a nice bit of pizaaz.  It would be a lot of work for the user to make those for all his vids, though. (5-sec autogenerated random sample would probably be useless).  And having a bunch on the screen at once would distracting.  Maybe only for the currently selected video?

If it's a fight for resources there are lots of other improvements to theater mode I think are more badly needed, but this is a nice idea.

Yeah that would work, maybe that aswell as when you mouse hovers over another. It would only ever then be two at max animating on the screen at a time.

I'd be willing to put that kind of work in for my files. Hopefully the random factor would make decent gifs for most of them.. As I'd probably just keep doing it at random until I got a good one.. I know the J River team don't like the idea of over cluttering the options, so there would probably have to keep the options available to a minimum. Although users wanting extra settings could use an external Video to Gif converter and then just paste the gif onto the file.

I'd make a Yes/No field to allow me to check off which ones I was satisfied with.. And then I would make a view that would only show the once I wasn't satisfied with. This would allow me to keep going back over time without getting lost.

It would be a a lot of work but worth it..

I think both options for a static and animated thumbnail would still have to exist because there are probably people who wouldn't wish to do this..
