Question about file information in XP
« on: May 23, 2002, 11:21:02 pm »

XP has a magnificent option of showing file information for images and audio file called SUMMARY.

Well,
MJ8 Has a magnificent and powerfull tool for editing tags, But,
My Windows does not recognize the tags.

(When I'm ripping CDs it creats tags and the Windows know them, But, when changing them, NOT. WHY??)

I'm not sure but I think windows XP only recognized ID3v1 tags and
the default behaviour of MJ8 is to save tags as ID3v2 (if necessary).
You can change this by going to Settings/Plugin Manager/Input/MP3 plugin/Configure
and set iD3V2 box as 'Don't Save', ID3V1 box as 'Save (create if necessary)'

But you should be aware that in doing so you will get the ID3V1 limitations for
track name, artist, album, comment (28 character length I think) and no saving of
custom fields etc..

Hope this helps.

Yes you can,
just set the 2 boxes (V1 & V2) as 'Save (create if necessary)'.

Well I don't know if WinXP can handle files with both ID3v1 and ID3V2
tags. I will try that at home during the weekend. I'll let you know.
My feeling is that Windows will not understand it.
stay tuned

if i remember correctly once you put in a id3v2 tag, the tags do not show in windows file explorer.

just another good reason for not using id3v2.

I could fill a book, on a user stand point and a programers stand point

plus
there are some good reasons for using it also, one of them dealing with streaming - cover art and mp3 data is sent first so a user can see the picture and data when the file starts to stream.

> MORE reasons for not using id3v2
id3v2.4 has been out for sometime but is not supported by most mp3 players to include MJ, mj supports id3v2.3

I am tired now

Is there a way to persuade my XP?

Or should I stop using the ID3v2 (I have just started using tags)?

ID3v1 is too short, not?

Uri Ts.

do what ever you want..

> MORE reasons for not using id3v2
when you make one change to a tag with id3v2 the program must re-write the whole mp3, and if you change many mp3's this will take a long time.

if you use id3v1, the program only re-writes the last 128 bytes of the file, much quicker

most tags are less than 30 chrs, and id3v1.1 tags will do the job.

-
you can not store cover art in id3v1.1 tags

That's Right King,
I just tried it and Win XP does not diplay properties
for mp3 files with iD3v2 tags even if there is an ID3V1 present.

You really need to remove the ID3V2 tags, leaving the V1 alone, if you
want to display the properties with Win XP explorer.

Now my humble opinion : Wether you use just iD3v1 or V2 you better always
manage your mp3's from within MJ it's a lot better.
and you get much more information that you'll ever get with WIN XP plus you get
all the natural power of MJ.
