Future? - DSD ISO SACD Playback?
« on: September 28, 2011, 12:34:36 pm »

Hey,

Thanks again for a wonderfull program, I use every day  :D

Can you add DSD ISO direct support in MC?

When I need playing ripped SACD iso files, I have to use Foobar 2000
With the SOX resambler and SACD plugin. Then I can play the iso files
directly in very high quality.

I`ll like to do this in my MC instead. Can you support this in future?

Cheers

The latest version of MC16 should be able to play the files.  It won't mount an ISO though.

Hey Jim,

I now can play .dff files at 44.1 but not at 48 or higher. If I use these, then
MC rebuffer after short playing.
CPU ussage load almost look the same at both rates.

Could you use Help > Benchmark and post your results?

Thanks.

A JRMark of 437 is a slow machine.

Try turning off any virus checker.

If it's a laptop, make sure your power setting is set to "High Performance".

Close any programs running in the background if possible.

That's slow, yes. I'm getting 1100 on my 5 year old HP Laptop. I'm not sure how much power should be necessary to run this audio files though. Never tested them my self.

janslyn, remember that you can use ISO readers like Daemon tools to mount the iso's. MC can set to open the files externally, and then auto play the "disks". It's what most people use for DVD iso's etc.

Sorry, but resampling of the super-high sample rate DSD requires a strong CPU.  I would guess you'd need about a 1000 or better score to deal with DSD nicely.

Yes, it seems slow when benchmarking. My old MSI Labtop run 728!
My music computer is one year old Asus Eee, with touch screen,
and a Atom 333, 1,6Mhz, win7 computer.
Not a super computer, but comfortable as mediacenter, work fine for now with flac hires 24bit - 192 Khz...

When I use highest in-/output settings in Foobar, while playing DSD iso direct, it use about 50-60%
CPU, so it run high, but with super sound :-)

No problem. I can use the MC for the Flacs, and Foobar for DSD, works fine...

I`ve just ask, because I like the MC that much  :)

Cheers

Thanks again for offering DSD playback.  Do you have plans to offer native DSD playback without converting to PCM?

With more DSD capable DACs coming and more DSD downloads coming, it would be great to be able to play the DSD files without having to convert to PCM.  My DAC is noticeably better with native DSD.

We hope to support bitstreaming of DSD over ASIO in the future.  Of course, this requires a DAC with ASIO + DSD support.

Sorry to break in on this topic. How do you rip your SACD files? I only see the (regular) CD files when I try to rip a SACD.
Do you need special software to do this?

Thanks,

Theo

I think you need an old PS3 with SACD capability (which the newer ones don't). But also you need one with an old firmware. Then you need to hack it with Linux and then you can rip the iso.

There was one Sony laptop I think from a few years ago with a SACD drive. But this couldn't rip, only play.

I wish there was an easier way, because I would be a lot more keen to buy SACD if I could rip them. I don't feel strongly enough about it to go out and buy a dedicated player (or trawl eBay for a particular specific PS3!).

If there is a better way, I would be delighted to buy SACD! A classic case of DRM backfiring!

I only have a few but I never play discs anymore.

I only have my 5.1 Surround SACD of Roxy Music's Avalon, which I'd love to be able to rip or convert.
